I thought it might be good to install Recovery Console on my PC, in the event of boot problems.
So I followed the directions in
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307654&Product=winxp
I soon got the message that RC could not be installed since the WinXP CD I had inserted was for a version of Windows earlier than the one installed on the PC.
The PC is just over a month old, and came with WinXP (SP1a I think) installed, and with a Dell "full retail" XP CD. Last week I installed SP2, so that must be the reason. I tried the MSKB procedure using the SP2 CD (from Staples) and got a message that the path was not correct.
So it seems I will have to do without Recovery Console, unless someone here knows how to get around this (other than uninstalling SP2).
And this should be a warning to others still thinking about installing SP2. Install Recovery Console first.

    Jim,

Have you tried running Recovery Console from your install CD rather than installing it? Boot from CD - first blue screen I think gives the option - at the bottom of the screen?

I agree with PeteC. My feeling is that if the PC is hosed badly enough to need a recovery console session, it will probably do better booted from a CD rather than from the HD that needs help.

On the other hand, for your own protection, consider using a good reliable disk cloning program. The Recovery Console is a kluge at best and not worth the effort required to learn and apply it.

As a matter of fact, you may have an OEM XP disk that doesn't include the ability to install the Recovery Console. Such OEM-Crippled versions are common. Bottom line, if it isn't a genuine Micro-Soft Windows XP install disk, you are not holding all the cards. A genuine Dell Windows XP disk may fall short.

As an alternate and to blow the mystery all away, I use Acronis True Image and feel well protected. I make a weekly disk copy and store it on a second drive. I also run GoBack for the short term convenience that it affords.

    WelshJim,
In the nearly 3 years I've used XP Pro, I have had very little success with the Recovery Console. I would have to agree that a Image Restore program would be worth the investment if you need the insurance. Once XP gets broken, the Recovery Console is not exactly "dependable ", IM Humble O.

OK, I understand that SP2 is just protecting me from a poor MS recovery system. Thanks, Bill! :D
