When using Mozilla to save a webpage, I often end up with a file that Windows doesn't know how to open.

I get an error message which says ...

To open this file Windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer.

    neither of which work.

I then have to then use another browser to save the page so it can be opened.

I'm running XP and Firebird 0.7.

Has anyone else seen this problem ?
If so, were you able to resolve it.

    thanks

    An interesting sidenote ...

When I use IE to save the page, it saves it as a Mozilla document.
When I then go to open it up, it opens it using Mozilla as the browser.

    sir gerald,

Do you mean Thunderbird, or Firefox? If it's Firefox, you really need to upgrade to Firefox 0.9.3, due to some security problems in older Versions. See this thread: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=33642&highlight=Security

What you describe does not happen in Firefox 0.9.3, and I am able to save any web page. When I click on the file on the HD, Mozilla 1.7.2 opens the file, since that is my default browser.

Have you designated Firefox as your Default Browser? That's done in:
Tools | Options | General | Default Browser

    Ramona - it's Firebird 0.7
Which is the same thing as Thunderbird except without the email capability.

I've got Firefox also but it has some annoying little quirks.
And Firebird seems to be a lot faster and uses fewer system resources.

This is an intermittant problem but it can happen with anything I download.
Text, .jpg files or an HTML web page.

Can you tell me how to turn off the download history box on Firefox.
The one that opens up whenever you download something.
That's one of the annoying quirks I don't like about it.

    thanks

    sir gerald,

    The error:
"To open this file Windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer. "

indicates that you haven't designated a program to open HTML files, and if you get the same error when downloading JPG, or other files, then check your Registered file types for file association.

    For HTML files do this:
    Open Windows Explorer
Click on View | Folder Options | File Types
Scroll down to: HTML Document and ensure that it points to Firefox

Do the same for your JPG files, point to the graphics viewer application you use. If you have IrfanView, that would be the application to use. WordPad for txt, etc.

I've not used Version 0.7, but in 0.9.3 in the Tools | Options | Downloads, there are two options which you can enable/disable:
    - Show Download Manager window when a download begins
    - Close the Download window when all downloads are complete

    You should have something similar.

    Ramona,

I'm convinced the problem is on the other end ... whatever host I happen to be downloading from when I have this problem.
It's too intermittant to be able to get a real fix on.

Usually I'm able to re-download or in the case of a web page, I've found that I often have to save them as the complete web page and not just HTML or text files.

    Thanks for your help
