    1. I recently installed Windows ME and Office 97. All ‘My Documents’ .doc files from old W98 computer were then copied to ME via CD and at this time all are ‘Read Only’.

    2. Double clicking any .doc file brings up the message, “This file does not have a program associated with it for for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel’

3.I checked Folder Options>file types and confirmed .DOC is associated with Microsoft Word and is showing the W icon but still none of the .doc files will open.

    4. However if I open Word from the desktop s/c or Winword.exe in Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office and select File>Open I can open any of the .doc files!

    5. I also have another problem. The @ key prints “ and the “ key prints @ but I would not think that was associated with the 1 - 4 problem; would it?

    Regards,
    Pat

    Hi Pat..

just a suggestion, in windows explorer, what Icon is showing beside the "Doc" files? May give you a clue as to what trashed the Shell\open entry in the registry....

    Cheers
    Jake

Thankyou Jake for your reply. I finally decided to uninstall Office 97 then re-install it and Word is now working as it should.

    Kind regards
    Pat
