    Hi,
when I try to open an HTML attachment (such as the Newsletter) Win XP asks me to select a program to open the attachment. My problem is that the "Always use this program .... etc" is greyed out. How can I re-activate this feature?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    TIA
    Tony

    Welcome to the boards.

What program are you trying to open HTML files with? HTML type files are normally associated with Internet Explorer.

From reading your post it sounds as if your file association for these types of files has somehow changed. There are a couple of different ways to try and correct this.

Instead of trying to open the file right click on it first. From the pop-up menu click on Open With, then click on Choose Program. In the Open With window under Recommended Programs you should see Internet Explorer, select this. The "Always use this Program" should now be available, put a checkmark in it and then click on OK.

If that doesn't resolve your problem open Windows Explorer, click on Tools, Folder Options and then click on the File Types. Scroll down to HTML. Under Details for 'HTML' extension it should say "Opens With Internet Explorer ". If this is not what is listed click on Change and select Internet Explorer from the Recommended Programs list. You will note that "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is greyed out but the checkmark should already be in the box.

Post back and let us know if this resolved your problem.

    HTH. :)

Thanks Rod, but neither of those tips worked.

When you try to open an HTML file and windows asks you to select a program what program do you select?

When you right click on an HTML file does Open With appear on the pop-up menu?

When you followed my first suggestion was Always Use this Program greyed out, or could you put a check in it?

When you went to File Types what program was associated with the HTML files?

    Rod,
Sorry for the delay. The problem only occurs when using my web based email service. Perhaps the root of the problem is there.
When I look at file associations,Windows says that the associated program is I.E.

Maybe I should contact my email service?

That being the case it wouldn't be a bad idea for you to contact your service and explain the problem to them to see if there is a fix for the problem you are experiencing.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
