I have a D-Link wireless router and nic. My has a Netgear wireless router and nic. Is it possible to mix these? Can she access my router when she comes to my house and can I access her router when I go to her house?

it should be a peice of cake. Only possible problem is WEP keys, a quick fiddle in the GUI and you should be off and running. Most of the wireless stuff is based on standards, and its not a bad idea to match manufacturers, its not required. I use an orinoco card against an SMC access point at home, works like a champ. It also lets me connect to my next door neighbors linksys (from the comfort of my living room muahah) without a problem.

What exactly is the "WEP key "? Is it the hex number itself, or is it the pass phrase (auto key generator)?

Newt, I do not have a SSID or a WEP key. Where would I get them? Those screens are what I found.

    Ron,

Have you tried getting access from your PC through her router? Most wireless cards will automatically search for available connections. You may not need to reconfigure ANYTHING. Just open your wireless connection properties and check the available wireless networks. Add hers to your preferred connections if needed.

The WEP key is a security device that you use on a wireless network to stop others highjacking your network connections. If you don't know what it is, you probably don't have it set up. To start with get everything working with out a WEP key. Once it is working then secure it by using WEP. Post back for help with that later.

The SSID is the wireless network identifier. The devices connecting to a single wireless network need to share the same wireless SSID. Your friends wireless network might not use the same SSID as yours. If this is the case you will need to change the SSID on your computers to match the local wireless network.
