How can I turn off the feature in windows that displays a dialogue box when the mouse is placed on text or a link especially in IE. I find this most annoying when trying to read and a box keeps coming up with the same text in it as I'm trying to read. I can't seem to find where to turn this off.

I believe your talking about "Balloon Tips ".
I just did a "Help and Support Center" search on Balloon tips.

    or

You can download and install TweakUI .
    1) Start TweakUI => Click "Start" button => Select "RUN" from Menu
    2) In "RUN" menu enter tweakui
    3) Select "Taskbar and Start Menu "
    4) In right-hand window deselect "Enable balloon tips "

if i dig what your describing, you want to disable all tooltips inside IE.

First way would be to go to IE tools-options-advanced and hit the accessability option for 'expand ALT text'. This is not a total solution, but might be closer.

There are 3 ways to do this from a web page, basically.
    1) ALT text: in order to truely nuke this, you'd need to run something like Proxomitron to strip the tag from the markup stream.
    2) span tag (we use those here on the thread windows): nothing will alter that behavior without risk to adversly affecting other content
    3) Dynamic javascript: you could disable scripting in IE

If there is a particular site you visit that you want to deal with, you could figure out what they are doing and evaluate your options. I also beleive some of the other browsers out there, like netscape will allow you to force them off with a checkbox, ie has no such option.

    Low tech solution:
Don't read with your cursor. Watch where you keep it on the page.

I have tried the suggestions you have given I have stopped the tips from occuring on the desktop but not in IE it would'nt be so bad if they did not stay up for so long (4-5 seconds) 1 second would be better or not at all even better. Thanks anyway.

It may be you are referring to the pop-up boxes that appear over some links and some text on some web sites. An example is on this page. Scroll down to the first post from "ImaNihilist" and hover over the underlined word, "Windows. "

If that's what you're referring to, as far as I know, there's no way to turn those off. They're paid advertisments.

Yes it's those pop up boxes that I am talking about it's like the Post Reply button below place the mouse on it and it says "reply" well that's pretty obvious that's what it does and place the mouse on some text on some web pages and it comes up with a repeat of what your already reading it's most annoying.

Discovered another low tech solution. Browsed page Miz suggested and don't see what you're talking about. I'm using mozilla, so.... :D

    Same here but using IE.

Miz...I don't see any underlined "Windows" in any of "ImaNihilist" posts on that page. Did the page change?

EDIT: Found it! I found a "Windows XP " in one of "GetCarter's" about halfway down the page. Now I know what you mean.

    Even after dobhar's directions, Mozilla doesn't show pop-ups. :D

    Sparrow,

This is not so much about popups actually as it is about java scripts.

Using IE alone, the popup appears and almost immediately disappears moving the mouse pointer off the word.

Enabling Proxomitron which I have set to filter out scripts, both the underline and the "Popup" disappear.

So my guess is that you have Mozzilla filtering scripts and IE can be set to filter as well.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Sparrow,

Forgot to add, look at this thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=34490 on IE's SP2 blocker, in my first post I give two sites that have very difficult popups to test against. So test Mozzilla against them. I'm not doing this as touting IE so much as interest in blockers in general and other Browsers that have been ahead of MS on this issue. I repeat, this is NOT a "religious" issue with me and in no way do I wish to engage in a "my browser is better than yours" debate.

    Regards - Charles

Actually, mozilla has a separate setting - see image- I don't know if that refers to scripts alone or something else too.[IMG]

    HI Sparrow,

I don't have experience w/ Mozilla, but from the evidence, it's blocking a script from running.

IMHO, The pop up blocker from SP2 is a nuisance in IE. I have adequate ad filtering (AdSubtract Pro & Norton) and the IE pop up blocker is catching "ads" they miss, which aren't ads (because their database is better) but legit parts of the website. I was doing some shopping online, and, as if I don't have enough problems with my computer right now, some windows I needed to complete my transactions failed to appear- until I "freed" them from IE. I suppose I could figure out how to shut it off, but very soon I will be driving my truck over this computer a few times, and it will all be a moot point.

Johanna, appreciate how you feel, but yes, it can be shut off and dialog reopened by right clicking the "blocking" symbol.
