Every time i try to open up any exe file on my computer (besides internet explorer) it gives me the following error:

Windows cannot find 'File name here'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

I think I deleted some file required by windows because my antivirus came up with an infected file and just thinking it was something in the temp folder, I made the mistake of clicking delete without looking which file i was deleting >_<
If anyone knows which file I might have deleted or any way to fix this please tell me.

    Welcome to the BBS :)
    Two things to try.

    1) Use system restore to restore back to a restore point prior to the AV
    glitch.

After running system restore I would run a full AV scan on the system. Make sure the AV programme has the latest definition update loaded.

    2) Use the system file checker to replace any overwritten, damaged or missing sys files.

Start/Run and type sfc /scannow You will need your installation disk in the CD drive.

It wont run system restore. Anything that I click on that needs to open up in order to be run....which is everything....excluding internet explorer for some reason, just wont open at all. I tried reinstalling windows but I just got this computer a few weeks ago and I cant get it to boot from the windows CD when it starts up, and i cant run the setup file due to the corruption.

Oh yea and also I thought about scanning stuff but i couldnt directly open the AV. So I tried right clicking the thing i wanted to scan, and clicked the 'scan this file' button that comes up in the menu and that also allowed the program to be opened.

To make it easier, this doesnt have to be a mega solution that will allow me to keep all my files. I have no problem with reinstalling the OS and just installing all my stuff again, so if anyone can help me boot from the CD that would be all I'd need. Unless of course you can save me the time :)

To boot from the CD You need to set that option in the BIOS Setup program - just after the computer checks memory tap the DEL key several times until the Setup opens. Or see your Manual for directions.

Set the boot order to floppy, cdrom, and hd0 (hard disk zero).

BTW, It appears that you do have an infestation. Be sure you have a firewall and updated antivirus when going online.

When you attempted to boot from the CD, you did press "any Key" when prompted to boot from CD? 'else the boot order will progress to the HD.

How old is your Mobo and CD? Early Mobos (and CDs) usually prior to 98-99 often didn't have the option to boot from CD. Sometimes a BIOS update corrected this, as it did for my old (1998) Aopen AX6BC board.

The computer is like less than a month old lol
I noticed it was prompting for the 'press any key thing' but what it was doing was displaying it so fast that i couldnt press it fast enough. I've tried jus jammin the keyboard before it even comes up but that doesnt work either

Also something else I just found out again is that if i use the 'open with' thing when you right click a file, i can run any program on the computer by selecting it, so the EXE files definitely arent corrupted...

Try tapping spacebar rapidly while waiting for the keypress prompt.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and OK. Yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode. Logon to the Administrator account.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files.

Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.

Again go to start>run and type sfc /scannow, with the XP cd handy.

Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Scan your PC with RAV. Check the box to autoclean. If any files are infected and uncleanable, click the report button then copy and paste it here.

Try tapping F8 repeatedly when you power up the computer. Sometimes take several attempts. Do a RAV scan reguardless, and if you still can't get to safe mode, do as much of the cleanup I listed as you can from within Windows.

Good to hear things are working properly again. I still recommend you scan with RAV. ;)
