Having problems with multiple windows open although only clicked once
can close using taskmnr but also system freezes up have run virus checker and sfc but did try to run chkdsk/f but it sceduled it and when i rebooted it
said the chkdsk operation had been cancelled? (not by me!!) when trying to shut system down it says that there are many applications running I am
thinking that this is hardware as opposed to software but would like to know if anyone has had simular as it may be processing? motherboard has built on cpu giga pro1 system has also been networked and shares bb ics.

    thankyou in advance

Try booting from the XP CD to a recovery console and then
chkdsk c: /r (assuming the OS is on C: )

I had a problem a few weeks ago where I had similar behavior. I was using Firefox as my 'default' browser and when I would click a link in an email it would open two instances of the browser. I thought that possibly Firefox had a glitch and changed my default browser and would try it again with the next version of Firefox. Yesterday I was downloading the newest version of Nero (SP2 compatible) and my FTP client (FTP Voyager) was opening twice. This is beginning to make me wonder if Windows is the culprit. I'm still running SP1, so we can rule out SP2.
Newt... is there some performance gain running chkdsk from the recovery console as opposed to using the 'cmd' window?

    B

just as a follow on I have done a repair and also managed to run chkdsk now from boot up as this was not possible before the repair but I am not sure yet if the problem has been cured as I need to test it thoroughly as it did not also happen which makes it more difficult as these are the hardest faults to follow when they do not always stare you straight in the face but if it has worked I will report it back to keep the help going

    thanks again guys
