If you Ctrl-Alt-Del can you get to task manager?

Do you get any error messages about explorer.exe?

    Hello bobm,

I don't know how much time you're going to spend on this, but there comes a point at which you stop.

If I were confronted with this situation, I would reload XP/SP1 or SP1a getting back to a working system.

Then, the first issue to look at would be drivers. Have you the latest drivers?

    Regards - Charles

    Hello bobm,

I would also ask HP for a XP cd all by itself. AFAIK, "recovery' cd's are a "all or nothing" solution, they only allow going back to "factory" settings.
