I have a pc with Windows 2000. One user and several profiles. In the Documents and Settings, there's the usual folders (profiles) and then some:

    administrator
    all users
    all users.winnt
    default user
    default user.winnt
    username.computer

I understand the, administrator, all users, defaul user, username profiles but, what are the ".winnt" folders for? Can they be removed?

    Thank you.....

Is 2K on this machine a fresh install or was the OS an update/upgrade from another version?

Is your computer, workgroup or domain called "winnt ".?

That is the only explaination I can think of.

    Hi ReggieB:

No the domain nor the group is labeled winnt. Nor is the pc id in the net config's. Each pc's domain is unique to the user and the group to the division they work in. There is no such name except in the windows explorer. I've not seen this before.

    thanks for asking though.....

    Hello Suzette,

I've seen this issue twice before,

once when we did a reinstallation of windows and set the windows-folder to the same place like the previous installation

and an other time was when we've changed the name of our domain, afterwards the accounts on the clientpc's were renamed to account.winnt
so by example for user "lirie" after change of domainname, it had changed to lirie.winnt,

is it possible that one of the above has happened in your case?

Hi Lirie: Thanks for the reply and idea. I will definately look into the domain change. It is very possible that a user may have changed the domain on me.

Unfortunately at this time, we are preparing for a hurricane. So, I will have to put this on the back burner until our return. Hopefully we will not be hit too hard and have something to return to.....;(

    I will post back.........

Suzette - good luck with Frances. If you are anywhere in the projected landfall area, maybe good to head north (or maybe even south but probably north) a day or so before this bad lady is due. I have children in Orlando and am seriously hoping they will take me up on an offer of spending a weekend with us - Concord is far enough inland that even if the dang thing tracks over is it will be pretty weakened.

I'm pretty blasé about small storms and even the occasional barely-Cat3 but this one scares me - at least for folks in the path she takes making landfall and for quite a few miles after that.

    Hi Newt!!---all...

All's not quite done down here...;( I was really hoping to get back to work, only cuz it can be pretty boring shut-in after two days. Then to spend 3-4 days on clean-up just to face another storm. (Almost like MS Windows XP)

Either way, we all hope for relief soon----real soon. And, as soon as we are permitted to return to work, and straighten up there, (i.e. pc's on and over tables, cabinets, plastic wraps, and spread all about the building for safe keeping) I will be posting back with my results from the suggestion that Lirie gave.

Meanwhile, I hope you will keep this post open....till Ivan the Horrible is gone.

    Thanks for your patience.

    Sincerely,
"molting" southern fried chicken by now.....
    Suzette

p.s. Newt--I hope your family is safe and sound--and took you up on your offer.....

    Thank you Lirie!

    Howdy All!

Now that we're semi-dry on the Central East Coast, I looked into the domain naming of this pc and found that the pc connects to a laptop through an external hard drive setup as a "mirror "/backup unit. This hard drive goes to a home domain along with a laptop that connects to yet another domain. The user was not aware that his son had been changing the network configurations so that he can use the laptop. Therefore, Lirie had hit the problem on the nose. Thanks Lirie!

With all the domains that he uses, the pc is now working fine when he boots. I'm just glad that he does NOT use XP right now..... (2K o/s)...;)

Thanks for all the suggestions....sure am glad to be back at work......yes I'm a little crasy, after all they say us computer-geeks are strange.....;)
