Working on a well maintained computer, XP Pro SP1, spy/ad/malware free, keeps freezing randomly. Hardware is okay, so are drivers. Temps are fine. No errors in event logs. Looking for software conflicts, I removed AWS (WeatherBug) and cleaned up the registry. During a freeze, computer, kb & mouse is completely unresponsive, even the system clock stops.

Tried sfc in safe mode, admin, admin user no joy. Comp will not make it through an sfc / scannow. Comp will also not make it through an RAV scan, but I'm 99% sure it's clean.

After a freeze, and I hit reset, it reboots- sometimes correctly, sometimes not. If it does boot properly, it goes to white "restore active desktop" about half the time. Active desktop is not locked down.

I'm stumped. Repair XP? Reinstall XP? Am I overlooking something? Help! :(

How have you verified this point?
40+% of all XP issues are driver related per MSKB.
Could also be RAM failing or the drive itself failing.
Any recent power surges? (never rely on a surge protector, even the expensive ones)
Can you start it in Safe Mode and run scans? If so, then look to a driver as the cause. (this includes drivers used by AV scanners, firewalls etc)

Also, some XP issues seem to respond well to

    start~run~cmd followed by
chkdsk c: /r and do the stuff to fix on next boot then boot.

When the system comes back up you should see an informational event in the applications event log that gives detail on what chkdsk found and what it fixed.

Can you ping the machine from another box when it is in the hung state? Does numlock toggle? What is the frequency of the phenomenon? Is there an operation that you are doing that can invoke this condition?

    Johanna,
My "old" Celeron 466 with 384Mb RAM (Aopen AX6BC Mobo) didn't like XP (including SP2). This is with a fresh install with virtually nothing else installed. It would randomly lockup (total freeze) within minutes or hours, even with no apparent activity or usage. The reset button was the only option.
The BIOS is 1998 vintage from when the board was first issued. I have flashed all the updates, but the underlying BIOS is still fairly old, so guess this has to do with the problem. From memory 98 and W2K worked OK???

Yesterday I FINALLY found the cause. It's been running freeze free for over 24 hours now, a record.

In the BIOS I had to change the "resources controlled by" from Auto to Manual. I also changed PNP OS from yes to no, but on itself this didn't help so probably could set this back to yes. But changing the resources to manual had fixed a problem that has been bugging me for 3 years!!!

No conflicts were apparent, but changing to manual seems to have fixed it.

You might try verifying your drivers, anyway, just to be sure. Go to Start > Run and type: verifier. This will start the driver verifier tool. Select the cutom settings box and look around. Changes are session-only if made after the initial screen. You might start by verifying only any unsigned drivers you have.

Thanks to everybody for the suggestions. But, yesterday, I broke XP. It took almost a year, (this time!) but I broke it. And then, trying to fix it, I killed it dead.  Sob!!

So I did a full format of the OS partition and reinstalled XP from scratch. All I lost was time, because I have a lot of software to reinstall. My D drive emerged from the mess unscathed, and that's where all my "stuff" lives.

It continued to freeze during my attempts at a "repair" and finally I got a few "Windows has stopped to protect your computer" blue screens, and then the repair got stuck in a loop. The "Fatal System Error" inspired the full format of the C drive, and, since I already trashed my dear friend, I installed SP2 today. (It froze 3 times during that one!)I will post a new thread about MY experience with SP2- hmmm...that thing on the IE toolbar that won't let me download programs needs to go!!! But, that is a whole other story. This is weird, too, I reinstalled Norton, and only had about a month left on my subscription, but it gave me a full year. I was going to upgrade to NIS 2004 anyway, so they will get their money. ;)

TonyT-I have two identical 512 mem sticks, and have tried the MS diagnostic, as well as physically pulling them. The hard drive passes all of WD's tests. I have an APC UPS and a dedicated circuit breaker just for the computer. Some scans and installs are flawless, some take a few tries. The computer runs great, if it doesn't freeze!!!

Joe, the comp is completely unresponsive during a freeze, down to the system clock. I could only ping it with a hammer! No one activity will freeze it- I'd have nailed it down by the process of elimination by now. There is absolutely nothing in the Event Logs except a frequent Service Control Manager Error. I kinda wondered if I had damaged XP with my freaking tweaking, but the clean install negates that theory. Must be hardware, but what, I don't know.

It is still freezing with a clean XP install, and the only drivers with errors are my printer, which I haven't reconnected yet. (How does XP know that is still my printer when it was disconnected and all of its 200Mb software was on C? Oh, well, a question for another day.)

Now if I can get my telephone modem (XP insists my modem is a different kind than it is, and thus will not accept the drivers) to work (my back up ISP!) I'll be happy. I just want to keep it running until I can build the NEW BEAST.

Paul, thanks for the idea. I don't have anything in my BIOS like that. Abraxas, as soon as I get the kids to bed, I will start going through the drivers one by one, if I have to. Right now, except for the mobo, sound, cable modem and t-ball, it's operating on XP generic ones. All peripherals are disconnected, and I have a splitting headache.

    Thanks, everybody!
    Johanna

    Hello all,

Been talking with Johanna and found there were some errors in device manager. SM Bus controller, HP printer that wasn't even attached with the fresh OS install, and another I don't remember. After removing the printer, all other errors are gone, but system is still crashing. New chipset drivers this AM. PC boots up properly now too, just won't stay up. She did manage to get an Everest report and send to me. I wanted to post the debug dumps included in the report in case they might mean something to someone.

    Joe,

We did a reg merge for that key (I think you wanted it set with a value of 1??), then looked for a dump after a freeze and reboot. Didn't find a new one. Can you tell us where it should be, and possibly named? Having a bad time using the search function, or anything else that uses resources. Also edited the boot.ini file (msconfig wouldn't run) to get a bootlog. Didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Odd thing was, when trying to take the /bootlog switch out, finally accessed it through start>run C:\boot.ini (nothing else would work.....froze) only to find an empty text. That explained why she started getting boot.ini errors. Rebuilt the file, which now has the /NoExecute=OptIn switch from installing SP2, and bootup was normal, msconfig works again as does sysedit. Still freezing within 10 min. Edited the switch to /NoExecute=AlwaysOff and last I knew, it was up for 25+min.

Hehehe.. sorry guys, should have elaborated. After you set that key, when it hangs, hold down the right CONTROL and hit scrolllock twice. cntl-scrl+cntl-scrl.

244139 Windows feature allows a Memory.dmp file to be generated with the
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=244139

Its a backdoor hack into the keyboard driver to force a dump when the rest of the machine is out to lunch.

wonder why the boot.ini was empty. odd.

Okay, Joe, is this MS humor??? :D

You have no idea what all we have been through- down to trying to fix msconfig after we broke it! It had to close every time I clicked on it. I would also get two Dr Watson Postmortem closures (had to end in Task Mgr) Turned out the boot.ini file was empty, but the comp mostly booted sucessfully, each time, after each freeze. We used Dave's boot string with Pro substituted for Home to create one while it was empty, and that restored the System Cofig Utility. We did a bootlog, and it's clean.

Now when the computer boots, I get a timeout screen that gives me two choices to boot, with the second one highlighted. They are both the same, best I can tell. We took the no execute off of the boot string, and it seems to be booting normally, now, except for the new screen. XP sees no errors. The event system viewer quit on Aug 28. No scans can be completed anymore- not sfc, RAV, Norton AV, AdAware etc, but the system is clean.

This computer works wonderfully, and is apparently having no problems. But it freezes. Uptime can be seconds, minutes, hours, but it just stops. Temps are fine, cpu usage is normal, there are no errors or dmp files, diagnostics are not detecting any problems. I reinstalled the chipset drivers from SiS yesterday, and have had better luck rebooting since then. At this point, I'm inclined to think "hardware" (those of you familiar with my Ver 1 ECS mobo are nodding your heads!) and have decided to quit procrastinating, and upgrade.

I built this computer in Jan 02 when XP was new. The only original parts are the case and hard drive. I know it well, hardware and software, and I'm fairly sure that I will not quit messing with it until I fix it, or break it, and if I win the fight, my kids will love it. I figure I am still winning, because I am online right now!

Okay, when Dave's not busy, we'll try the "expanded" directions. Thank you, Joe, for all your help, too. Please keep in mind that I am pretty green, so all elaboration and additional details help me. Never assume I know anything, because I probably don't! But I'm taking notes! :)

    Johanna,

This may stop the OS choice on bootup. Boot to safe mode, open the boot.ini file and paste this line under the text there.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Save and reboot. You should get an option to boot to the system with or without the /NoExecute switch. Choose without. Open the boot.ini file again and take that newly added line out. Reboot. Should start normally to the /NoExecute system without a choice.

Thoughts Joe? Thanks for clearing up how to get a dump from that string. :)

ROFL - "clean" and "works wonderfully ". What does it take for you to declare a PC to be a problem and working poorly?

Newt, Dave and I are going to beat this dead horse to the ground, stomp on it, then give it CPR and pass it down to the kids. I just ordered an XP 3000 AMD/Athlon w/ an 80 gig hd, dvd/cd combo, a gig of mem and a decent video card. It comes with free MS DOS! :D I can't wait! DOS is fancy software, right?

Anybody know where I can get a Version 1 ECS mobo to replace this bad one, cheap? LOL :D :D

Thanks everybody, especially Dave, for the confirmation that, yes, indeed, I'm not the only hard headed person here! ;)

you get prompted if there is more than one entry in the boot.ini. remove the extra one, or set the timeout to 1 or something so it goes by fast
