Hi, hope someone can help. When I turn on the computer it behaves normally until everything is loaded including the stuff on the toolbar then the screen goes black and it starts up all over again. This can happen anything from once to ten times whether or not I bi-pass the scandisk option. Eventually I am faced with a blue screen which says "An exception 06 has occured at 0028:FF0F92D4 in VXD Wdmaud (07) + 000A5C4. This was called from 0028:C001C344 in VXD NDIS (01) + 000047D0." If I press the space bar the computer then works normally. Thanks for reading.

While the graphics or display adapter is known to cause all sorts of odd symptoms that one would never associate with the current problems they may be experiencing and merlins suggestion should certainly be followed up on.....

    My additional comments are:
OE error as in memory problem such as ram, wdmaud as in windows audio, ndis.vxd as in modem or network card, restarts from 1 to 10 times as in these may not be the root of your problem or one or all are your problem. (both wdmaud and ndis.vxd have hotfixes or patches for known bugs to be used in special cases). Have you updated Audio, Nic, modem and win98 with any current appropriate updated patches and drivers?

Are you confused yet?... :) Could be drivers, software or resource conflicts. What does your "Device Manager" show ya'. Any problems?

Is this problem new? Any gut feelings about what did you may have done recently that you suspect may have caused this? Can you supply a little background on what you may have done via installs or uninstals recently? Any other odd behaviors?

NOTE: I wonder if you have a conflict going on between any applications you may have loading at startup? Could you have a message or chat progam optioned to load and run at startup? You could stop or reduce these these by using your startup tab via msconfig. Just type msconfig on your startmenu run line and click on the startup tab. Uncheck those that are not critical. (Plenty of how-tos in the archives of past posts)

Seen this happen once on a Win98 box...the person had "Active Desktop / View as Web Page " turned on. We turned it off and the problem went away. Active Desktop is a resource hog...

    - Right-click Desktop
    - Select "Active Desktop "
    - If check mark on "View as Web Page" select it and it will be turned off

Hi, just want to thank you guys and to let you know I am working through your suggestions. Not got a new video card, thought I would try the other things first. Nothing unusual in Device Manager. I'm thinking the problem started after an aborted attempt to install AOL broadband. I went into misconfig and removed the two things to do with this and for a short while thought I had it sorted, but now it is back again.

    Hi,

I might suspect that it is a program that takes control of the video settings (may have something to do with the AOL program). Try going into msconfig and unchecking eveything except Systemtray and Explorer under the Startup tab. If the system runs OK, recheck one program at a time to narrow down which is causing the problem.

Suggest you try removing the video drivers in Device Manager and checking for updated drivers at the manufacturer's website.

    Matt
Edit: Sorry, Explorer does not appear under the Startup tab in msconfig, I was thinking of Ctrl-Alt-Del.

Sounds very similiar to a problem on one on my machines.

Even though they were NOT SUPPOSED TO the kids tried installing AOL. Well it turned out to be AO H###. It took me the better part of an afternoon using MANUAL REGEDIT to get the trash out.

The machine would lock up. Random Restarts.

And last but certainly not least.

If AOL does not install and run properly IT WILL NOT uninstall properly without A LOT of manual work.

If you do need to do a lot of regeditng for YOUR SANITY. PLEASE !

Remember to DELETE ALL of the RB00X.cab files in the C:\Windows\Sysbckup folder.

If you do not WINDOWS may/can put all the stuff back in. What is not there Windows can not use. Just make sure SCANREGISTRY is loading at boot up. Delete the said files. Restart Windows and it will make a new one.

Also after you get get things cleaned/fixed ( no matter what it is ) up any other types of backups will need to be refreshed.
