I was looking for backup software that backs up in usable format not some file that needs to be restored by the program

Backup programmes I'm aware of will use a propriety format. The good news is that to restore a backup image all you need is a boot recovery disc/disk.

A couple of examples are Norton Ghost 2003 (and earlier). A boot floppy will allow your to restore the backup and will also allow you to make a "no bells and whistles" backup without first having the programme installed on the PC. You do need the programme installed somewhere to make the boot floppy.

The same is true for Acronis True Image 7.0/8.0. Make a boot/recovery CD for imaging or re-imaging.

From memory the same applies for Drive Image 7.x as well??

    File backup

Have you tried Replicator, avialable from Karen Ware at

    http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp

This is an excellent program that simply copies selected files to anywhere you choose, i.e. another drive on the same PC or on a networked PC or even to a CDR.

Backups can be scheduled too. I use it a lot and install on customer machines also. One of the best and easiest to use, especially at the price ;-)

BTW lots of other great software at the site too!!!

Hi solanabch - are you looking for a backup app that will
    - save a disk image, or just some files/folders only
    - run only in Windows or in DOS as well
    - scheduled or manually started
Have you found/seen any apps on the net that meet your requirements ?
If so, what is the name of it/them.
    regards

My Own Backup is another one. Backs up files using zip compression so you can get at the files without using the program. I've used it in the past and it works great. It's freeware and contains no adware (at least that used to be the case).
