my pc needed a fresh clean install of Win XP, so i transferred my data to another hard disk. This new hard disk with the data transferred on it, i set it as primary slave on my pc. When i switched on the pc, both hard disks were detected and i could access all files from both hard disks.

So i booted from the Windows XP Pro CD and deleted my C: partition and re-created, then when i started the formatting with NTFS, the format stopped at 7%. It happened twice, everytime stopping at 7%. Then i have tried the formatting using the Quick format option and the Win XP installation went flawless.

Now, since everything is working fine, do you think that there is something which i should worry about, since the normal formatting failed twice at 7% ?

    Thanks for any advice.

I think I would be concerned - a quick format only erases the file system and a full format clearly formats the whole drive and this failed for some reason or another.

Is this the same hard drive referred to in your thread ....

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=34170&highlight=chkdsk ?

I would run chkdsk /r as suggested by Newt - post # 10 and one of the disk utilities provided by the manufacturer of the drive. Possible you have a hard drive problem looming.

    Hi Pete,

Thank you for your reply. Yes it is the same hard disk in question. I will try the chkdsk /r tonight when i get back home, and i will reply with the result.

    Thanks.

i've run the chkdsk /r and after it finished it restarted the pc and then it said that the volume was clean. Now since i formatted my drive (quick format), i cannot repeat the steps to cause a problem (as newt suggested in my other post) since everything is working fine.

So any further ideas regarding the matter ?

    Thanks

You haven't mentioned which brand of HDD but whichever it is, they should have a disk management tool. Go see what they have on their web pages and download the appropriate one.

I suspect that the downloaded program will create a bootable floppy to check the disk from DOS without Windows running.

Caution - there are tools that will delete data on the HDD so unless You are committed to fix the issue "at all cost ", avoid any and all write tests and sector repairs!

I agree with PeteC that I'd be worried. Personally, I would let the disk management tool first do a thourough check without fixing, which would let You see any error code produced.

Next I would let it do a sector repair (if any bad ones were found) and finally I would let it do a low level format.
The last two actions will put You back in square one - having to reinstall everything again but I would regard it as worth the extra effort rather than loosing any sleep over it.
