    Hi All,

I am trying to help my sister clean up her PC. She has XP Home and I have XP pro. I wanted to look at her PC using Netmeeting but hers is missing. I had her go to Start > Run and enter conf.exe and it came back with Not Found. I had her search for conf.exe on her C Drive and it was not found.

I don't know how it got deleted, but it's not there. Is there any way to reinstall it?? The download from MS says "This Version of Netmeeting cannot be installed on this version of Windows" when I try to install it. (NM30.EXE)

    Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

    Gary

    Hi Gary...

Kewl username...back 20 some years one of my nicknames was Horse. I'm 6' 4" and weighed around 280 lbs back then...Big as a horse just stuck... :D

Hmmmm! According to MS => http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q298327 is supposed to be there. Read also => http://www.theeldergeek.com/netmeeting.htm

What you can do in the meantime is use Remote Assistance to connect to her PC. You will be able to take control like Netmeeting and she can watch you work. You can also see if you can find "Conf.exe ".

All the info is on this BBS post => http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=33790

On my WinXp Home system the conf file is located in C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

The following on how to Run, Remove and Reinstall Netmeeting is from Kelly's Korner

NetMeeting - Run, Remove and Reinstall

    Run: Start/Run/conf.exe

    Remove: Start/Run/RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\WINDOWS\inf\msnetmtg.inf,NetMtg.Remove

Reinstall: To reinstall, open the Windows\Inf folder (this is a hidden folder, so you may need to adjust your Folder Options to show hidden files and folders. Or you can click Start, Run and enter %systemroot%\Inf). Locate the msnetmtg.inf file in the Inf folder. Right click and select Install. Have your XP CD handy.

    Thanks for the replies!!

I will try using Remote Assistant instead. Does that work through a firewall?
(Linksys on my end, her end is directly connected) I was planning to just directly connect my side if there were problems connecting but it would be nice if that wasn't necessary.

    Thanks again!!!

    Hi horse...

I have the same setup as you and your sister. I have WinXP Pro SP2 with a Linksys Router and my mother has WinXP SP1 Home.

I did not have to open any port on my router as I was connecting to her PC not the other way around. As I mentioned in one of the other BBS posts I linked to I got my mother to setup her PC to use RA using this Work Instruction from => http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/winxp_remote_assistance.htm. It was a simple as => She send me an e-mail invitation that required a password, I accepted invite, once connected to her PC I asked for control, she granted conrol, and voila.

So in your case your sister will setup her PC for remote assistance. She will then send you an RA "Invitation" via e-mail. Follow the instruction in the link above and you should not have any problems.

    Have fun... :D

    Hi Dobhar,

Thanks for the info. I was able to get on her PC using RA. While I was poking around I did find conf.exe. I dunno what she was doing but it didn't work for her. (that's a different story!!!)

Anyway I was able to clean some things up. (lots of spyware gone) and it is working better for her.

    Thanks Again!!!
