I, unfortunately, noticed that my wife's Inspiron 5000 didn't have XP SP1, so I installed it and on startup, I get a quick BSOD ... with a message something like .. Session Manager. ... It just cycles through startup...BSOD. I can't pause the **** thing and I can't read it in the second or so that it is visible.

    She's gonna kill me. HELP

    Hello OldBob,

Forgot, can you go into Safe Mode - F8 or F5 on bootup? and from there "last known working configuration ".

SP1 can be uninstalled via Add/Remove. If no entry - post back, the uninstall file is in WINDOWS and starts with $NtUninstall...

After the uninstall, if you have a recent System Restore point - restore the system to that point.

    Regards - Charles

I tried running the system fixup from the WinXP disk. But that didn't help. I then hit F8 on startup and selected "Last Known Good Configuration ". That worked. I can now boot, even though the system doesn't say that it is SP1, I will now live through the night.

The other interesting problem is that I cannot use Windoze Update. I get an error that isn't listed in the KB ... 0x800700B6. This means that I cannot apply any of the security patches.

    Any ideas.

    Hi Oldbob...

Try Windows Update Troubleshooter. I could not see your specific error but ya never know.

Hey just found this => http://www.talkaboutsoftware.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/messages/109563.html

    Hello,

Visit our Windows Update Troubleshooter page:

    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

    Look for this topic:

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot supply the requested
page; Cannot Display Page (Windows XP)

    ==============================

This is from the Windows Update Troubleshooter page...

    Problem Description:
This may occur if Service Pack 1 has been removed from the computer either through System Restore or by reinstalling Windows XP into the same directory. You may see a page that states that the Web page has an unexpected error or cannot display the page that was requested.

    Resolutions:
The value for the CSDVersion in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows
needs to be changed to 0. If you are comfortable editing the registry, follow the instructions below.
    1. Click "Start," and then click "Run. "
    2. In the Open box type regedit and click "OK. "
    3. Browse in the left frame to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows
    4. In the right frame you will see the key CSDVersion. Double click this key.
    5. Change the value to 0 and click "OK. "
    6. Restart the computer.

By going back to "last known working configuration - you in effect did a Restore as far as the Registry is concerned.
If you have a Reg cleaner, now is the time to use it - the Registry is rather messy.

OK, the system is back running, and dobhar's solution for the windows update worked. I also increased the size of the pagefile, which was significantly undersized for some reason. I also changed the setup so the system doesn't restart on an error.

This is probably the time to try re-installing sp1<g>.

SP1 did install and at least loads. But, there are some interesting things going on here.

    1. Norton didn't load .... said there was a problem and that I should uninstall and reinstall.

    2. Could not uninstall... when I try to unistall, I get a message that the Microsoft Installer could not be found.

    3. Can not copy files. The copy part works, but "paste" is greyed out.

    4. Cannot view events in the event log

    5. Cannot view properties for services in services.msc

Bad trouble in river city. I'm dead.
