I have just upgraded my OS from Win ME to Win XP Home. I had to uninstall Norton Internet Security 2004 but now when I try to re-install it I get this message: "The MSI must be launched through set-up - OK ". Clicking on OK brings up this message: "The installation encountered an error and was unable to complete the installation - OK ". I think MSI refers to Microsoft Software Installer but I don't know what to do now. Any help would be most welcome.

Most likely possibility is that NIS didn't completely uninstall.

Try Symclean and see if you can install it after their utility removes all traces of previous installs.

If not, post back and if there are any related entries in your event logs (start~run~eventvwr.msc), that information would be helpful. To get a text copy of an event, open it then click the icon below the up/down arrows. You can paste that in a reply here and save yourself lots of typing while you make sure we have all the needed information.

Thanks Newt, went to Symclean and got worried when I saw this
So I went to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301 and downloaded Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. This seemed to work and I re-installed NIS 2004, but........

.....now everything is so low its unbelieveable. It takes 5 minutes just to log off one user and switch to another!!!! This can't be right surely? Is there anything I can do?
