Yes, this is the problem I have faced ever since last week.

I was running a routine chkdsk scan when I had a power surge in my house causing my computer to shut down. When I had powered up the computer again... I was greeted with a stop message saying my hard drive is corrupt.

Absolute panic began because I'm a musician and all of my studio sessions are on this corrupted hard drive... and alas I was ready to back up all of the files that exact day. I had NO backups whatsoever... so I decided to take the hard drive to my friends house and hook it up as a slave to see if I can atleast save some of the data. So, I hooked it up and ran chkdsk... and it repaired the corrupted information... and rewrote the indexes.

It worked like a charm again... better than it had been.

So I returned it home to it's rightful spot in my computer :)

Everything was working fine and still is... but everytime I run certain programs... a small yield sign with an exclamation mark pops up to remind me that the program that I'm currently using is corrupt. Even though it has no problems running or performing actions like before I had this problem.

Is there any way I can shut this small warning off? or is there still a possibility that my hard drive is still corrupt but I don't know where?

    Several suggestions at this point
    - keep current backups of any data files (your personal stuff) that you are fond of
    - uninstall the programs that trigger the warnings
    - run chkdsk /r to get the best possible check and clean
    - reinstall the programs and see if you still see warnings.

You could well have a drive or drive controller starting to go bad. Hard to say from the symptoms but ignoring those warnings probably isn't such a good idea.

Easier to give solid advice with more information so try looking in your event logs for errors/warnings that look related. If you find some, open the event, click on the icon below the up/down arrow (sends a text copy to your clipboard) and paste the results here.

I've ran chkdsk and it says the volume is clean.

It wont let me dload certain files on IE now so I'm not able to redload the files for AOL Instant Messenger etc.

I've also been having problems dloading files and streaming mpegs ever since the hard drive went haywire.

If I uninstall/reinstall the primary IDE controller... do you think that might help?

This is beginning to sound really hardwareish so I'll move the thread there.

i am confused by this " a small yield sign with an exclamation mark pops up to remind me that the program that I'm currently using is corrupt "

I do not understand the source of this message. Windows does not do this. Are you using a specific program when you see this? A database program could be detecting internal inconsistancy in the database file, not a hard disk thing.

I have no answer but I can confirm the appearance of a yellow triangle in the notification area on my taskbar eversooften. I don't know yet what causes it to appear but when I click on it, it disappears.

I'll try to pay attention next time....

Is this not notification of updates from Windows Update v5 - or is my grey matter failing? :)

    Well,

I have no clue where the corrupt message is coming from... but all I know is windows writes to the error log everytime it reports the corrupt message.

I've started to see a pattern in where I get the corrupt messages.

I only receive them on programs that have some sort of interaction with the internet.

Aim only shows me the corrupt message once I connect to the aol server...

Winamp shows me the corrupt message when it connects to the internet on the browser...

I've seen plenty of HP printers cause a yellow caution flag - mostly those 3 in 1 or 4 in 1 scan, fax, copy & print machines. If this is it, unistall and re-install.

Whoah! Those *are* windows messages. I didn't know XP did that still. That message was semi-common in NT3.51/4.0 days, I haven't seen it under 2000+ before. It used to be a big stinky popup to the console.

Ok, so heres the deal: Your drive is hosed. Based on your description of what started this mess, we have no reason to beleive that your hardware is malfunctioning, this is purely a software inconsistancy. You need to do a FULL backup, reformat the drive, and restore the data. If chkdsk can't fix it, there is no other way. I must urge you to do this before the corruption creeps out and nukes something important to you.

Before you do, can you check your system event log, and paste any exciting errors from DISK, like 55s, 9s, etc..?

Here is some KB articles that were written before i was born describing the phenomenon. Ignore that they reference 3.51 and 4.0. The basic idea still applies to XP.

I have a second hard drive... but I'd have to delete a lot of stuff off of it in order to backup the stuff I want to keep. I'll try to do so...

The games and files I have ... I can reinstall basically... so thanks for the help guys!

Sorry to hear that - maybe zipping some of your data would help with the shortage of disk space?

    Hi,

Relates mainly to the internet? I might suspect AOL. It takes control of a lot of system processes. I have come across (quite) a few problems with it before. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of it and also the AIM program.

I don't use AOL or any Messenger but I do use an Epson CX6400 4 in 1 Printer.

Here is my one warning I got since I did a clean install of XP Pro SP2:

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: Dhcp
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1005
    Date: 14-Aug-04
    Time: 11:44:47
    User: N/A
    Computer: BIGDADDY
    Description:
Your computer has detected that the IP address 209.169.66.178 for the Network Card with network address 0020ED3031D5 is already in use on the network. Your computer will automatically attempt to obtain a different address.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

It was the triangle in Chambizzle's "yellowmark" link.

My Event log shows no more of these since the 14th. I'll keep an eye out for other happenings.....
