I have been rebooting to enable the DMA and when I start the dvd player, it reads that the DMA isn't enabled, even though it is checked under device manager as enabled.

I have Compaq Presario 5202 Windows98 with a cd burner but I downloaded a dvd player region free softwaretrial for 30 days.

    Any suggestions?

    Question?

I may be stating the obvious here .....but is your Cd burner DVD capable? ( you might want to download the freeware Neroinfo tooll which will tell you everything you need to know about your CD burner)

Jack, if you are running XP, the OS will turn off DMA mode for a device after encountering certain errors during data transfer operations. If more that six DMA transfer timeouts occur, Windows will turn off DMA and use only PIO mode on that device. In this case, the user cannot turn on DMA for this device. The only option for the user who wants to enable DMA mode is to uninstall and reinstall the device.

Also check for a chipset/bios update for your motherboard as these are sometimes addressed in them. Make sure your toggeling the DMA/PIO mode setting correctly. Try this...

To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager

    1. Open Device Manager.

    2. Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

    3. Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

    4. In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only. "
If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings.

    That is:

    • Change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click OK.

    • Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available.
