In the TSR area of the computer occasionally I get a message saying

"Local Area Connection A is now connected
    Speed 100.0 Mbps "

    and at other times

    "Local Area Connection A
A network cable is unplugged. "

Now I know that nobody is in the house but me and I have not even touched the computer. Everything is working fine, network, internet, and shared printers. What might cause this. The cat5 wire is about 100 feet long. and looks fine, no breaks or smashes.

A network cable is unplugged. is sorta misleading. Certainly it can mean you unplugged one or both ends of the cable but it mainly is the PC saying to you, "Hey boss - I can't see the network right now. "

I'll guess that your network card(s) are set for speed and duplexing to Auto and what you are seeing can simply be the switch and card speeds or duplexing getting out of synch for a minute.

Most of the SOHO router/switches don't allow setting changes to the switch port but all NICs allow you to set them so locate the connection, right-click and get properties then to the hardware settings for the network card. Depending on the specific card, you may have a combined speed/duplex setting or maybe one for each. Set it/them to 100Mbps full-duplex.

If your switch also allows port values to be set, force it to the same settings.

Hope it fixes things up Ron. If not post back and we can at least try to track down the problem with the most common cause removed.

Might also be a good idea to reboot your router/switch (power down, wait, power up) and if there is a firmware update available, load it.

It could also be a dodgy cable or connector (loose connection).
