    Hi,

I need help! I downloaded a cleaner program to try to get my old machine working quicker, but i think i clicked a wrong button and deleted some important things that i didnt want to. When i go to switch my machine on now, i get the following messages...

"Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.

The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try uninstalling that application to replace the missing file.

    C:\WINDOWS.002\system\VMM32\ifsmgr.VXD

Press a key to continue... "

So i do then it tells the the same thing, except...

    "C:\WINDOWS.002\system\VMM32\ios.VXD "

    Then...

    "C:\WINDOWS.002\system\VMM32\IFSMGR.VXD "

    Then...

    "C:\WINDOWS.002\system\VMM32\IOS.VXD "

    Then...

    "Insufficient memory to initialise Windows.

Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and restart your computer.

Press any key to continue... "

    Then it automatically shuts down.

there is also mention of symantec!

    Can you help me?
    Cheers all!!

Hi Gaucho, On your PC do you have a folder Windows AND a folder
    Windows.002 ?
Please post the lines in the file C:\msdos.sys
    - you will need to right click on it and uncheck the hidden box before it
will open in a text editor , eg Notepad

We are trying to find out why you have a folder Windows.002 on your PC.
This is not usual - normally there should be just a folder Windows
(without the .002 suffix). So maybe you have installed Windows OS twice.
Secondly, I am trying to find out from which folder Windows is booted.
This is the reason why the lines in the file msdos.sys are needed.
Do you want us to go through this click by click ?
The first info can be supplied easily with "My Computer" and the second
by right clicking C:\msdos.sys, choosing Properties and unchecking
the Read Only, System and Hidden boxes. Then load Notepad and open
msdos.sys. If you cannot see msdos.sys, you need to use Windows
Explorer and on the tabs View/folder options/view checkmark "Show all Files"
    regards

What merlin is looking for when asking about there being two Windows folders is the fact that Windows may have been re-installed at some time and was not handled properly and it created a 2nd Windows folder. ( Windows.002 )

The above is my guess right now. ( having done it YEARS back ) :(

    ie: A C:\Windows folder and a C:\Windows.002.

To find out more about what is there you could boot to a 98 Startup Disk a do a DIR on C: drive. Then look for Windows folders.

At this time it looks like you may need to re-install Windows. As it is obvious ( at least to me ) that a re-install was done after booting from the HD.

    Boot from a Floppy.
    Change to the CDROM
    Type CDROM:\Win98\SETUP

So the command would look like D:\Win98\Setup. ( D: representing the letter of the CDROM )

You will need the Product Key.

During the install WATCH CAREFULLY to make sure that Windows gets installed to C:\Windows

Normally when booting from the floppy it will go there anyway because it does not see windows as being on the HD already. This is why I ALWAYS recommend booting from the startup disk when a re-install is needed.

This will not only re-install any missing things but will ( most of the time ) carry everyting over that is already there.

Need more help ? Come on back. That is what we are here for.

How did you attempt to boot ?

If you used a 98 Startup disk it should pick up the CDROM.

If you booted from the HD then the possibility does exist the it might not find the new CDROM.

I have changed CDROMS several times since my 98 SUD was built and it has not failed me yet. In fact one of them is a new CRDW and it has no problem.

The original 98SUD has several CDROM driver on it and one of them should work.

Also if you have partitions C: & D: the CDROM letter will be F:.

If you have C: & D: existing. The various DOS items would then be copied to a RAMDRIVE which would be E:

Then the CDROM woulld be the Next letter which would be F:.
