I'm having problems with a PCMCIA wireless card. When I plug it in it gets recognised by Windows, but it can't find the access point. It can if I also plug a network cable in (the access point is connected to an ADSL router), but even then it can't strike up a wireless connection. What's going on?

We need more information. Make and model of card and access point. Relative positions of devices (are you doing this when the two are next to one another for example?). Is this the only device using the wireless connection (is it just you having a problem or are others getting the same problem)? Have you enabled any security on the wireless? Is the software supplied with card abble to detect a signal from the access point?

The access point is a Belkin F5D6130u (more info here ). This is the most I know about the PCMCIA card, that and it's based on an AMD chipset (I can find out which one later). I've tried it with the laptop and access point in the same room, but it doesn't pick up. If I also plug the laptop into the router with a cable the access point wizard finds it no problem, but won't strike up a wireless connection (only a wired connection). The card and acess point are on the same frequence and channel with the same settings, but it still doesn't pick up. No luck with or without encryption.

How are you trying to get to the access point? Some software to automatically find it or typing the IP address? Is the SSID the same? Are you running a firewall? Disable it or add the address to the software firewall.
I had a router that had software and it didn't find anything so I had to uninstall and then type the IP http://xxxxxx to the router and that worked. Also having the latest firmware for the accesspoint and card drivers might help.
