I'm about as lost in this as I could possible get and am fustrated beyond belief. As others have mentioned... I've rund Adaware 6.0, caught a bunch of spware, removed it and it keeps regenerating. One program keeps kicking off called sdksu32.exe. Immediately following that program executing my home page and search options are redirected. I down loaded spybot, ran the updates with the same results. I also downloaded swblaster and innoculated the system. Now I have loaded and run HJT v1.98.2 and here are the logs... I don't have a clue what to nuke... please help...

    Thanks...

    Hello MikeXsells

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot, Ad-aware and CWShredder. All are free and available from the links in my signature.

Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix. Then update and run Spybot. Delete all it finds that is prechecked. Then update and configure Ad-aware for a custom full scan and run, deleting all it finds.

    Spybot:
Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

    Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

    Restart your computer.

Move your HijackThis and save it to a permanent folder (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT). Open and hit scan, then save log. Once it is saved it will open in notepad. Select all from the edit button, copy and paste the results here.

    Thanks LD...

Thanks for the instructions... Followed them closely using updates from your links. My Ad Aware was out of date. I'm still getting redirects and adds to my start programs listing: Here is the HJT Log:

The items in green are borderline spyware, they supposedly function to keep the software up to date. They aren't really needed running.

Reboot and delete these files, and clean out all temp folders.
    C:\WINDOWS\simuv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\mxTarget.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\crnu32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\xjdihzqf.exe

Surf a bit, and then post a new log in case something else shows up.

Well if we aren't done we're pretty darn close...

Here is the latest HJT log... Ran the process just like you outlined and I hav logs from about:buster, Spybot, and Adaware if needed. When I ran services.msc the only one on your list I found was "Workstation NetLogon Service ", which I did stop and disable. Three were other services related to Remot Procedures, but they were not on your nasty list so I let them be. These inlcuded:

    Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
    Remote Connection Manager
    Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator

All of the above were left intact...

About:Buster found nothing, Spybot a small number of files / traces, and Adaware caught a handful of items. I then reran about:buster in safe mode and again after the reboot with it's scan being clean each time. I loaded IE and went to a few sites and there were no pop-ups or redirects. Here is my current log:

One more thing do you know what the exe "IPKW32.EXE" does? When I rebooted into normal mode something tried to add this to the executables to be kicked off on my next reboot, which I have not done yet. I deleted it, but decided to run a HJT log on my startup processes, it follows:

    StartupList report, 8/17/2004, 7:46:13 AM
    StartupList version: 1.52.2
    (to hard on my eyes)
Sorry for the long post, I just want to make sure this nasty doesn't have a resurrection when I reboot... Thanks a ton guys, this is an awesome community / resource

OK. after about half a day post a new Hiajckthis log, dont post startup lists unless requested please.

Lets check the appininit value, either with this tool or with regedit
Our forum might break up the location, if so just navigate there manualy.
    Note: \windows NT\ ,, not just windows
    Download reglite
install "Reglite" and run it, enter
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
into the address bar then click go.
Double click on AppInit_DLLs to open a "Data Editor" properties window,
if the bottom textfield named "Value" contains a .dll file
Take note of where it is.

Post the name and location of it back here in your next reply
this needs to be check by experts do not do anything with it yet!!

    Question...

Thanks Lonny... I'll keep the start logs offline unless requested... I downloaded Regedit and this is the path I went to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows

The entries on the right include:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\(default)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\DeviceNotSelectedTimeout
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\GDIProcessHandleQuota
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\Spooler
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\swapdisk
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\TransmissionRetryTimeout
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\USERProcessHandleQuota

I'm not seeing anything that is labled AppInit_DLLs or "Data Editor ", please advise....

    Are you Possitive ? here's a screenshot

also do this, it might lend a clue.
    make a folder c:\psservice

    http://www.sysinternals.com/files/psservice.zip
    Unzip it to that folder
Click on start then Run and type cmd and press OK.

At the dos prompt type : cd \psservice and press enter

type psservice config > psservice.txt and press enter

type notepad psservice.txt and copy and paste the info in there into a post here.

This may just be a wild idea BUT !.

How about running REGEDIT and a FIND for sdksu32.exe. ?

It may ( or may not ) at least give you a clue as to where it is being loaded from.

I would bet that is being ( or may be ) loaded from legit program.

    Hello Mike,

    SERVICE_NAME: Messenger
Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers.

Are you on a network? If not, shut it off, nothing depends on this.

    Regards - Charles

Thanks for the suggestion, but we've moved past this... Since the last scan in Safe Mode this program hasn't kicked off once...

I hook into a wireless network here and at client sites... Most server communications would be at client sites right now and in the office by Oct when we move into our own place... If it's not absolutely necesary I'd like to leave this one on so when I'm on a network it's not an issue...

    Thanks...

This is along charlesvar's suggestion, however go to the below link,
    http://grc.com/default.htm
and get UnPlug n' Pray, DCOMbobulator, and Shoot The Messenger.
These will disable three services you do not need running, expecially the messenger as it can be used for popups. This is a major source of popups of any computer on the internet.
This is not to be confused with MSN Messenger.
However, after reading the last post concerning your concerns about disabling messenger. The alert that is referred to is if your SysAdmin sends you a 'instant message'.
Ever get a message from someone in your local network this way? Do you know what a Net Send command is? If you answer no to these two questions, then disable it.
If the popups stop after disabling, you have found the culprit.

    This is certainly a puzzlement.

Your list of running services is long and would be unusual for a normal home or even large business network user to need all of them but if you change environments very often, I can see a case for having every one of them run the way they do. The all do appear legit.

The registry entry Lonnie spoke of earlier would normally be present on your PC although mine is blank just as Lonnie's is and in that case, missing shouldn't be an issue except to wonder where it went.

Correct me if I've missed something but as of now, the only problem you are having is a re-direct attempt by something?

Based on a total lack of searchable hits for IPKW32.EXE, I'd have to suspect a random-named file dropped on you by a virus. Maybe a couple of online scans are in order here.

Otherwise, I suspect we will have to wait for more nasty stuff to turn up so we can try tracking things down.

The only other suggestions I can make are that you run a chkdsk /r on all your partitions (sometimes fixes strange, one-off issues with XP) and that you run eventvwr.msc and browse thru your event logs for errors or warnings that look suspicious. If you find any of those, open one, click on the icon below the up/down arrows (sends a text copy to the clipboard) and paste it/them here for us to have a look.

edit note: was doing my response while markp62 posted. I agree about disabling those services if they are things you can live without. In the case of messenger service, since the app he mentioned allows you to toggle the service on and off, good idea to have it and only allow the service to run if and when you need it.

I think this puppy is done...

Okay no redirects since this morning, no pop-ups, and no executables being added to my start processes. I shot the messenger, DCOMbobulated, and Unplugged PnP... So here is my current HJT log... If this looks clean then I think we are good to go...
