My Windows 2000 Machine Acting VERY Strange?!

ok, I dont know whats going on but my computer is being very weird and making me restart almost 5-8 times daily just to get work done. What is happening is after the computer boots up, I can open say Internet Explorer and be fine for a while but after only so long, the browser will try to load a page and sort of freeze. My icons in the taskbar turn black and all my other icons disappear. In the system tray, all the icons go blank as well. Then, I have to highlight the text on the webpage to be able to read anything. The only way I have figured out to solve this is to restart. Also, I cant get to msconfig through the run menu because it says the file is not there. I also removed WildTangent and I get a run DLL error everytime the computer loads saying that there file is not there. I do not know how to get rid of these problems and I dont have a copy of the Windows 2000 software so I cannot simply re-install. Is there a source on the web that I can possibly patch the installation or replace any of the files that may be essed up? Please if you have any idea, let me know whats going on!

 

Without the install disk you're basically "up the creek without a paddle. "
I guess you could borrow a W2K install disk and do a file check from the Run command in the start menu.

sfc /scannow

A repair install maybe another option.

Have you run Ad-aware and Spybot Search & Destroy for spyware?

Run a full system scan with an up to date virus scanner?

In my Sig. are a couple of registry cleaners, Regseeker and EasyCleaner as well as AVG free virus scanner. Use the Easycleaner Unecessary files cleaner as well as the registry cleaner to clear out some obsolete files. These tools may help?

Clean out your browser cookies, Temp Internet files and History files.
In Documents and Settings delete all that is allowed under your login in the Local Settings/Temp folder, as well as the WINNT\Temp folder.

Finally after all the above, run the defragmenter.

 

Well, I ran a full anti-virus scan and I removed 6 trojans, but my system still does not work right. When my computer does the freezing thing and the icons go black/blank, there is one process that is running it is called POWER SAVING. It seems that if I leave my computer idle for a while and just kind of wait it out, it goes back to normal and I can use it for a short time before it does that again. I dont know what the process power saving could be and I have run spybot and housecall on the system because my norton antivirus take too long to complete and just freezes before I can delete anything that it possibly finds. I checked the control panel to see if I had any weird power management options and there was nothing strange there so I am really at a loss. Any help is great!

 

Suggest you update your graphics card drivers to the latest available. Sounds like it's related to a video problem. Lowering the graphics acceleration one notch may help, but would suggest updating the drivers first before lowering acc.
Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display.
On the Settings tab, click Advanced.
Click Troubleshooting, and then move the Acceleration slider one notch to the left.

Just FYI, you couldn't run msconfig because Win 2K doesn't have it.

 

The same applies for sfc. The system file checker only applies to Win9.x and XP OSes.

Works in my W2K install here at work, Maybe I've got a bug?

 

Msconfig will run on Win2k but it is not always included. My work PC has msconfig, but my home PC does not.

 

I stand corrected. Dang... i'm surprised actually that MS has included that... I don't know where I got that from but it's nice to know for future reference.

And Chris H, the msconfig utility that is on your work PC was probably an add-on installed by your network admin. It is not installed by default on any W2K version.
