I must say that I had less trouble with 98 than I have with XP.
All computers are XP SP2. I added a 4th computer to the network.
I can see the computer from existing computers but cannot access it.
    The error is below.
From the new computer I can only see the workgroup not the existing computers.
I get a different error from that one, I'll type it in here.
As far as I can see there are no permissions while sharing on a local LAN Peer to Peer
    Other Info.
Cable modem connected to wireless router/switch (w/4 ports).
3 existing computers, 2 hardwired to port, 1 laptop wireless.
New computer hardwired. I tested new wire on existing and is good.
All computers can ping the router, all computers can access the internet.
All existing computers can ping each other and cannot ping the new computer.
Each computer has only one user (A=Loni,B=Ron,C=AXA,Laptop=Ron) plus admin, guest is disabled on all.
    All computers auto-logon.
There are no passwords for any of the users.
All the computer were setup with the Network Setup Wizard.
I have had problems with all of these computers but finally got three of them working.

All existing computers can ping each other and cannot ping the new computer.

95% chance that is a firewall issue with the new PC too well protected. Otherwise pretty much gotta be an issue with your IP settings. If you can't fix things with firewall tweaks, please post the following from the new (unavailable) PC and any one of the others. Post the contents of both c:\ipconfig.txt files and indicate which is from what machine.

Do this from a cmd prompt so click start, click run, type in cmd, click OK then at the command prompt
    Code:
    ipconfig /all > c:\config.txt
As to the rest of the setup, makes a difference if you run XP-home or XP-pro but the basic way you are set up
    - only one user account per PC
    - no passwords
    - guest account disabled (I like this one)
    - simple file sharing enabled (only choice on XP-home but from the rest you describe, pretty much the way you'd have to be set up even if your systems are running XP-pro)
is going to cause limitations on the amount and type of sharing you will be able to do and on the amount of safety/security you will have.

Probably not a major issue with you behind a router/switch with NAT and the SP2 firewall active but not IMO the most networking bang for your buck.

I did not activate the firewall yet on the new PC as I just built it.
    Done, they are below.
    What does NAT stand for?

Unless you turned off the firewall, I believe SP2 turns on the firewall by default.

Are your "workgroup" names the same? (Mshome)

NAT=Network Address Translation, allows your 1 public IP address (needed for the Internet--private IP addresses are not routable and therefore not useable on the internet) to be shared by multiple computers on your network.

Also, your DNS server ip address (from your ipconfig file) is pointing to your router, this most likely should be pointing to your ISP's DNS servers IP addy.

I did not know that. I just checked and the new computer is not up to SP2. I thought it was. Anyway the XP firewall is not activated.

    Yes, they are all MSHOME.

I did not set this, it was set automatically. Should I change it? Would that affect the LAN connections?

    Duh
I am sorry for this. When I tell you what fixed the problem you will understand.
First as I could see the workgroup and access the internet from the new computer that I added to the network. This was an old computer I am going to use just for typing letters and a print server. I thought that the hardware was all compatible. Well not so, the 3com NIC was a 10mbps and I am running a 100mbps LAN. I replaced the NIC and sure enough everything works without a flaw. So everyone stop scratching your head, Problem solved.
