The security patch for Outlook Express 6 SP1 (KB823352... 1.9 MB) is asking for download and installation. The point is, I don't use OE 6 for anything. Is there any valid reason to download and update?

Possibly not? Although viri and hackers can sometimes find a hole through an unused programme on your PC. For the sake of a 1.9MB download I would do it, and as OE6 is part of the OS I would definitely keep it patched.

If you read the tecnical details, you will find it is suggested to install it no matter if you use OE or not. There is a vulnerability in it that can be used by anything, not just an email thing.

You'll find often that an update that is labeled to address a particular problem sometimes contains an added bug fix or 2 that is undocumented. This is especially true if the fix updates system files that are used in common.

For a list of the files replaced by a particulr update, try Windows Update List:

So, I agree that you should install the update even if you don't use OE.

    Yes . . . definately !!!

I have come to believe that any time Microsoft admits to a gaping "hole" in any of their software (and . . . they offer a FIX for it), it is better to download and install it and not need it than it is to "need it" and not have it !!

Besides - If you allow your computer to go to the MS Update website, it won't detect or download anything you don't really need, anyway.

Just my humble opinion but I believe in "better SAFE than SORRY" !! :)
