It sounds like your previous version saved files are either missing or mangled. In any case, your best course of action would be to clean off the present version (IE6) and cleanly install whatever version you choose.

I recommend IEradicator for that job.

BTW, what is it that you don't like about IE6 if I may ask? I may want to get it some day and would like to know all the ups and downs about it.

    Regards.

Zephyr--Guess I am just lucky (so far). I installed IE6 over IE5.5SP2 several months ago. Works like a charm. (Only change I made was to get rid of the gratuitous Alexa--Tools|Show Related Links).

You didn't mention which version of windows you are using so have a look at this and see if any of the work arounds apply:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;ES-ES;q293907

    Snippets worth noting:
Use the uninstall option at Control Panel, add/remove programs.

If this option is not available to you, try this:

Open C:\Program files\Internet Explorer. Right click the folder Uninstall information. Click Properties
Uncheck the hidden mode and press OK. Go to C:\Program files\Internet Explorer\Setup. Run setup.exe

    Windows 2000

If you reinstall a W2K Service Pack you will not be able to uninstall IE6. W2K users can try running w2kexcp.exe /u

    To Zephyr,
This is not an attempt to circumvent or override your excellent advice, but as this board has had mixed results by members reporting on their luck with using "ieradicator ", I am merely offering what may be a considered a compromise or less risky method of the uninstallation of IE6 before having to resort to this application.

The Poster may be a "wader" or "plunger ", I'm just trying to make sure the option is[are] there.

goddez1, I agree, the conservative approach is often the best. I do know that IE4 and above are very hard to excise without doing damage to the system.

Also, in case IEradicator is the last resort chosen, there is a degree of encouragement in the fact that it has been changed and perhaps some of the problems with the first version have been corrected. It seems that it went too far for some folks so the present version is somewhat milder, like a filter tip version maybe. :)

I had no problems using the original but haven't tried the latest.

Thank you and sory for my lateness in replying.
I have suceesfully deleted the old version of ie6 and am now running ver5.
The only problem i had with 6 was rhe constant annoying reporting back to microsoft every time it decided it had a fault..also it would not let me in to dome chat rooms (because of a cookie problem?\)

jerry zarb that's good news. Could you post back a brief outline of the method you used to overcome the problem so others can benefit from your work?

I'm especially interested in whether or not you used Ieradicator since it is somewhat controversial.

    Regards

I used IE eredicator & found it to be quite simple to use.

By the way, if you can tell me how to get rid of the annoying "reporting back to microsoft " problem that I originally had with IE 6?/ because I have updated to IE 5.5 now..& thta salso has the feature built in.
    Thanks:(
