I just put together a new system for my son. It includes the following:
    VGA PWRCLR|RADEON9600XT 128M DDR TV
MB DFI|NFII ULTRAINF AMD NF2U400 RT
CPU AMD|2500/333 ATHLON XP BARTON R
Everything I've tried, so far, seems to work well, and he is more than happy with the system, but we can't seem to get the computer to read the PCI slots. I've tried to install a modem, and though the computer says the modem is operating properly, the dial up connection says that no modem can be found. I tried changing slots and installing the modem from my computer into his, but nothing seems to change anything. Is this a faulty mobo, or do I need to make some adjustment on this mobo go get the PCI slots to read?

    Hi Barry,

Modems either install easily or are tricky in the extreme. The directions that come with the modem must be followed exactly. I've had all kinds of trouble trying to cut corners; and sometimes that's the only thing that works. There is a setting in the BIOS setup that refers to plug and play operating systems, and you could try setting it both ways to see if it has any effect. On modern mobos one normally doesn't need to address pci slots.

I doubt very much that the mobo is at fault. In my limited experience I just keep plugging and for some unknowwn reason the critter eventually starts working.

I'll keep trying, but hopefully someone has encountered this problem and can guide me in the right direction.

If you want step by step help, that's ok. BTW, have you checked what COM port it's using? That should be a high number, like 10 or 11 for a new modem. You may have to install a COM port for the modem, but that's usually done by the installation program.
First check modem in control panel and do diagnostics tab and click more. If you see lots of AT responses then modem is working correctly as device manager said. If not it needs to be reinstalled from step one after unstalling it in control panel first.
    Please post back your findings.

There are two very different ways of installing hardware: in one the maker has you run the CD first to put the drivers on your disk, then shutdown and install the hardware; the other is opposite: you install the hardware first and then restart and put in the drivers. Which way is your new modem supposed to be installed?

    Addendum:
If you haven't done it this way, uninstall the modem in control panel, either under modem or under modem in device manager (it's all the same).

Reboot and when win sees the modem and asks for drivers, point it (browse) to c:\windows\inf (or the equivalent on your computer; the inf is all that's important)

Here is what I get now. Let me know if I can provide any other information. It sure seems like the mobo isn't seeing the PCI slots, as I tried to install an audio card, so my son could have a place to plug in his steering wheel, and that wasn't seen either.

    Standard 56000 bps modem
    This device is working properly.
    Port: Com1
    Maximum port speed: 115200
    Modem information:
    Field Value
    Hardware ID moto1_gen
    Diagnostics:
The modem failed to respond. Make sure it is properly connected and turned on. If it is an internal modem or is connected, verify that the interrupt for the port is properly set.

Might sound like a stupid question, but lets get down to some basics - what kind of modem is this - make, model and revision# ?

And, what's this reference to a second modem in your post - Creative modem blaster V90 ?

What PCI slot are you trying to put the modem in (count slots moving away from AGP slot) eg: 3 of 6

    Hi Barry,

Have you installed the motherboard/chipset drivers? It may need specific drivers for the CPU to PCI bridge (and PCI to ISA bridge if you have it).

I tried two different modems. One is a generic, and the other is the Creative Modem Blaster. Neither worked in either slot 2 or 4 of 5. The Modem Blaster is from my computer (Creative model #D15630-5). I can always get another modem (He is in no rush to be able to go on line, as he can do that on my computer.), but I'd like to find a way to check to see if there is a problem with the board before the 30 day return policy expires at Newegg. I did install the drivers from the CD that came with the mobo. If I knew the specific drivers for this, I could always go into explore then reinstall them by themselves. Modem Blaster says that it works with 95, 98, 2000, Me & NT. It works on my computer, which has XP, as does his.

"Generic" as in you don't know what it is. OK, so we have a mish-mash of drivers from two different modems gumming up the works and even though device manager tells us that the modem is working properly, we know differently. - So, lets try to fix this puppy.

First thing is - lets get modemless and boot with both of those modems sitting on your desk or some other "far removed" location. Next, go here and download and install this program. Then reboot.

Now, Open up RegCleaner and go looking for anything related to either modem, put a checkmark in its box and remove it. Now go back into device manager and take out any comm ports you find listed. Reboot again and check again. Windows should re-install your Comm ports at this time. Shutdown and install the Modem Blaster in PCI #5 as long as you know its a good working modem. Boot up and Windows should load drivers for it automatically.

Connect a phone cord and check it out.

    If no go, post back.

    ;)

I followed your instructions, but the computer still can't find the modem. My modem is a 56K V.90, and all the ones sold today are V.92. Could that be a problem with the new board? I tried the other drive on his computer that has WIN98SE as the operating system, and that drive couldn't find the modem either. I think I may have to call DFI on Monday, as they don't respond to email requests. I'm sensing that it is either a bad mobo or it doesn't work with older modems. Any thoughts on this?

What came up with RegCleaner? Please advise - will be in a log also.

Doubtful in my book that its your MoBo - the modem is or modems were being recognized. I'd say its drivers and/or modem port assignment problem and I trust that you are 100% sure that its a good working modem. I'd try a brand spanking new modem before I'd rip the MoBo out and RMA it. You're only talking a $10 -$15 part.

Very familiar with DFI, although not that specific MoBo - you can also reset configuration data in the PNP section of your BIOS, assuming that option is there. (will clean up any old interrupt settings caused by moving the modems around to different PCI slots).

    Barry,
I think I would get a new PnP modem. This one costs only $12.49 including shipping and I've recently installed one. Works great. If that won't install, replace your mobo. But there are times when it's just not worth bothering. :D

I bought the modem you recommended and just put it in the computer.
    NOTHING!!
This is getting frustrating. The computer still can't find a modem.

No offense meant but not quite true - you have used an older hard drive that was already loaded and put it on your "new system ". Start from scratch - we can spin our wheels forever and you'll still have a machine that runs like ****.

That is not quite true. His system has a brand new 80GB Western Digital HD that was installed with the system. The only things used in this computer are his monitor, floppy drive and the little speaker that plugs into the mobo.

    Barry -
If this is brand new perhaps you could enlighten me on the aureate, wild tangent and intel stuff on your machine? Intel could be from the "generic" unknown modem with an intel chipset but where did aureate and wild tangent come from? Thought you haven't been able to get this on the net because of non-working modems? CO7ft5Y?

That "stuff" is part of his games. It is required for the games to work. It was on the CDs when the games were installed. He has no problem using the computer. It works great. He just doesn't have access to the internet. By the way, when I do get it working, would upgrading his RAM from PC2700 333DDR to 400 or 500DDR help his performance, or is he limited by his 333mhz cpu? Also, I'd like to know where I could go to get info on fine tuning his bios for his particular usage and system. He has a lot of stuff turned on that is irrelevent (no overclocking, no networking, no wireless).

Barry, one of the BIOS settings for PCI bus may be incorrect. Try resetting the BIOS to "default ". There should not be many settings that require "tweaking ", just things like checking the AGP is correct for your card (eg. 4X or 8X, check against the video card manual). If everything is then going OK, you could try the "optimal" setting if there is one.

If there have been changes made that effect the PCI system, that may be the source of your problems. BIOS setting changes should be made one at a time and the system tested thoroughly after each one.

Adian's rojakpot is a really good site, the free section is not updated like the subscription section. Another that may help http://burks.brighton.ac.uk/burks/pcinfo/hardware/bios_sg/frcont02.htm
