    Hello,

    I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP 2. As never before, I noticed such an entry in my boot.ini file "/fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn ".

    What does it mean?

    Ralf

    Here is the entire content:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=10
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
    C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT= "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

    Hello ralf,

    Lets get one thing out of the way - did you have the RC installed prior to SP2 install?

    Can't find any examples of a boot.ini with it installed so trying to elininate that.

    Regards - Charles

    Edit: Did find one example and that line C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT= "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons is what it should be. The trouble is I'm not seeing the entire boot.ini in the example.

    Hello Charles,

    no - it was an installation over SP 1a. I downloaded the full installation file (266 MB).
    The second entry that is the recovery console was installed by myself but it's the "/fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn" which is entirely new to me and I've never had it before.

    Oh, OK - thanks, Charles for your finding the resource. I've just called a friend who has also installed SP 2 and his XP has the same entry in boot.ini - so there is nothing to be afraid of. :)
