In threads on this BBS I have seen members paste a thumbnail picture of their desktop, or appropriate page on their computer to illustrate a situation.

I have tried to copy a thumbnail picture and paste same, but it always pastes large, not as a thumbnail.

    First, I print screen.
    Then, I paste in word,
right click to save picture as
    saves as *.bmp

This where I am stuck -- when I try to copy and paste, I cannot paste the thumbnail size - the system always pastes the large size.

    Thanks for your help

Instead of pasting it into Word as a bmp file...which is an uncompressed, usually huge graphic format...paste it into a graphics program, save it as a jpg, which will compress it. Graphics program usually have a way to view the properties of the open file so you can adjust size and resolution before saving, as well.

If you don't have a good graphics program, Irfanview is free and will do what you need. Be sure to get all the plugins, too.

Alternatively you can open whatever image in good ol' MS paint, and go to:

    Image > Sketch/Skew

There you can choose whether you want to make it bigger/smaller by entering the desired percentage. That's what I always do anyway :)

Irfanview and saving as .jpg or .gif (much smaller than .bmp) is an excellent idea.

However, it will not help with your thumbnail issue. On the forum it's automatic when (and you have to be a contributing member) you attach a picture to a post, the forum software automatically posts a thumbnail in the post and you can click to expand it.

Other places you also need some way to create a thumbnail or else you will always see the full-size picture. It would help to know exactly where/how you intend to use thumbnails.

I use the free online jpg wizard called Pegasus Online JPEG Wizard to create my thumbnails and to reduce the file size (kb's or mb's). Works quite well except I noticed today, when I was editing a pic, that the page gave an error (THE PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED) when submitting the Pic.

Don't know if it's me (my network) or the wizard's server as I checked the site with my other 2 puters and got same error.

Anyways when it's up and running it works good... :D

Another excellent applet which I use for reducing the size of screen grabs to be posted here is ImageResizer from MS PowerToys. Adds a nifty Resize Picture option to the right click menu.

How to paste a thumbnail on this BBS

Thanks, Newt, for the answer for this board.

The reason I want to create a thumbnail is to be able to
illustrate a problem for another thread.

I looked at all the FAQ and could not see any instructions.

Some day I may need to create one for another purpose, so I do appreciate every one else's software ideas.
