Have had problems with dial-up to local provider. The provider has two different phone numbers which are local for me so I use either. Problem affects sometimes one, sometimes the other. Typically when I click Programs/Accessories/communications/dialup I have both numbers offered, and will take one or the other. In any case, nothing happens. No dial-up. So I try the other one. Occasionally nothing. But more often it works; I hear the noise of dialing (I have pulse dial not tone dial) and away we go.
But occasionally nothing happens with either, and today when I was trying to get them to go the machine froze.
Acting on guess, I closed and restarted. Then they worked ok. I have presumed since problem is variable, now you see it now you don't, it is not due to the modem. However.....I'm no expert. Appreciate comments.

Did you try to reinstall your ISP software?
Did you try to contact them?

Hi - seems as if you have in-house or 'phone company-house connection/cable problems.
Your ISP will usually recommend an engineer who can check these.
    regards

You may also contact your phone company to check your line for "noise ". Usually, it's a free service.

    Trouble with dial-up connection

Just to thank each of you for your helpful words. Currently function has been ok for several days, whether from following your thoughts, or the system's innate immunity overcame the sickness.
Best to all of you. ALK
