I'm not sure if this forum best fits this problem, but if not please move to correct one.

I'm trying to help a friend with his Verizon DSL connection. He has a Compaq Presario 2100 notebook running WinXP Home and an internal NSC 10/100 NIC. When the DSL modem is connected via the ethernet port, the ethernet lamp is lit on the modem but does not blink. When the modem is connected via the USB port, the USB lamp is lit on the modem and blinks (indicating traffic I assume). He is able to connect to the DSL service and get to the internet via the USB port hookup, but not the ethernet one. He can ping the modem (192.168.1.1 according to Verizon) via USB also, but not via ethernet. Windows says the NIC is working properly and he has installed the latest drivers available for it. I've tested the Cat5 cable with a cable tester and it is good. We have also turned off the WinXP firewall. Verizon says they think it is the NIC in the notebook that is bad, but I'm not so sure that it isn't the modem ethernet port. I gave him another Cat5 cable to try just for grins, but I suggested that he ask them for a new modem to rule out their hardware. I thought I would ask here if anyone has any idea what he might try that we already haven't tried?

Remove and re-install TCP/IP for the ethernet card.

    Rockster2U,

We'll give that a try and post back with the results.

    Rockster2U,

We tried to uninstall TCP/IP under Lan connection properties, but when we highlite it, the uninstall button is greyed out. Is there another way to remove and reinstall it? The OS is WinXP Home.

Do you have 192.168.0.1 set up as the default gateway on the computer?

Can you (at a command prompt) do a:

    IPCONFIG /ALL > IPCONFIG.LOG

And then use the resulting file to give us the TCP/IP settings for the network card in the computer?

The problem is now resolved. We allowed windows to search for driver updates and it identified a driver update for the NIC. We downloaded it and applied it. After update to the new driver, there were several more settings for the NIC speed, such as Force 10Base T at half duplex, Force 100Base T at Full Duplex and several more. The only setting that worked was Force 10Base T at half duplex. It must have something to do with the modem provided by Verizon (it's a Westell). At least the problem is resolved and he is surfing at DSL speed now. Thanks to all for your replies and suggestions.
