OK I know what the title sounds like; I'm not sure how to word it. I'm not installing SP 2 and was wondering if this will affect future patch downloads. Will all new patches require SP 2?

Can't see that they would require SP2.
One has to ask the question though. WHY?

Why what? Why am I skipping? Simple: I don't need it. SP 2 is a security upgrade for n00bs. If you practice safe Internet, you don't need it.

    I completely disagree.

And to be honest I think that eventually (not just yet, it's going to take a while for people to upgrade to SP2) future patches will require SP2 to be installed. Just my opinion, mind.

Umm, no it isn't, it's also a major update to the underlying OS the same as for the 4 service packs for W2K. I don't really need all the security stuff either, as I'm fairly carefull with my usage. But the compatibility updates, core file updates, and general fine tuning is all welcomed by me. It hasn't cost me anything, it hasn't broke my 2 towers or the laptop. I hasn't affected speed or application compatibility. I have absolutely no reason NOT to install it.
BTW did you have the same attitude with SP1? Do you run SP1? If you do, Why? You don't need it either, except for the installation of some programmes. The same will happen for SP2 over time.

I agree, and not just MS updtates. Software upgrades are also going to be affected, Over time, they are not going to want to make exceptions for an ever smaller minority of users. That's playing out now w/ 9X OSes.

I also think that SP2 is a larger change than SP1 was - it adds and changes core OS functions, for example the firewall. Don't know yet how different, begin to find out next week.

This is an old debate about keeping the OS or any software static - I'm satisfied and it works just fine - but over time, I don't think there is a choice, or rather there is a penalty for that choice.

    Regards - Charles

I didn't need to because my installation disc came with SP 1. I've read horror stories of people having to reformat their computers after SP 2 messed them up. I'm afraid that'll happen to me if I get it. I don't want it to cause my UT2K4 to stop functioning. You know stuff will go wrong with it at first and MS will have to issue patch after patch for it. So if I were to get it, it definitely wouldn't be right away.

Ok, in your situation, that's the right response.

    Hey shadowhawk,

You can always go back to 98. :D :D :D

As I recall you were really reluctant to even go to XP a few years back.

Installation of anything should be a smooth process. Sometimes, for whatever reason, the installation goes not as planned. On ocassion, people have bad single file updates go awry. People have browser, media player, and every other kind of update go awry.

This doesn't mean the product is ill conceived. It means the installation went bad. Windows XP SP2 update is a major update, more in line with an UPGRADE. Proper preparation of the computer is necessary.

Personally, I'd recommend GHOSTING the whole thing first. But I also recommend that people clean out their hard drive and defragment first. Make it easy for Windows to update.

This Windows XP SP2 is going to be with us a long, long time. It may be around longer than Windows 98SE. You want to be in the same boat as the people with Windows 98FE right now because they didn't want to upgrade?

No I don't. I don't have Norton Ghost so I can't ghost my HDD. Maybe I'll install it in a while, but I want to read all the horror stories first. "I installed SP 2 and now I can't get into Windows." "I installed SP 2 and now I can't go online "...

Sahdowhawk, you sound like you get a perverse satisfaction from the "horror stories" :)

Keep in mind, that it is a minority of users that have these major problems. Where that's a real problem is for IT people managing multiple installations.

Not a perverse satisfaction. I just want to be sure that it can't happen to me. I figure if I read about it happening to others, it can happen to me. I'm very hesitant to download anything onto this computer unless it's something I've used before.

You're to serious Shadowhawk. You need a holiday away from your PC. Anyone told you that? Don't worry so much. Remember "you're a long time dead ". Go on, risk "life and limb" install SP2 and tell us all how bad it went, or heaven forbid, how well it went. As it has for the VAST majority of users.
Remember... There are alway people in this world worse of than you. :D :D :D
