I experience the same problem with Windows XP but under a different situation. The only time the computer will randomly freeze is after I disconnect from the internet. Software is AT&T Worldnet, and I right click on the globe in the lower right corner. Select disconnect, and usually everything disconnects. But once in a while, everything freezes, although the phone line is free. Keyboard, mouse, nothing works. I have tried double clicking, then select disconnect, double clicking on the two "monitors ", select disconnect. It does not matter, ocassionally, as described above, everything freezes. The only way to turn things off is to hold down the power button.
Lots of fun. E-Machines laptop. Windows XP Home Edition pre-loaded. And re-loaded several times.

Have you checked your event logs for details?

You might try looking for an update to your modem driver. Do you know what modem you have? It should tell in Device Manager.

Right Click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer > Application or System

Double click on an entry to open it, click on the icon beneath the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard and paste here if relevant.

Looking in the event log, there was nothing pretaining to the problem at hand. The modem is
    Conexant SoftK56 Data Fax Modem
Computer is an e-Machines laptop. Tech support is useless, they do not know what an updated driver is. I have searched on the internet for an update, and have been able to locate any. The driver was provided by CXT.
