Hello folks I have just joined BBS and this is my first post. I have read through some of the advice given to people with probs in previous posts and have made some useful downloads. I have adaware 6.0 and spybot s+d 1.3 on my pc, as well as Avast, AVG and Norton 2003 antivirus progs, ZoneAlarm firewall, also regcleaner and TDCleaner - I think these must be doing their jobs coz I seem to have few probs - but just in case something has eluded all of these could some1 plz take a look at my HijackThis scan and let me know what they see - cheers ; )

as well as Avast, AVG and Norton 2003 antivirus progs

Note that it is not a good idea to have more than one AV program active at any one time. They don't play nice with each other. Fine to have several but use one for real-time scans & protection and only use the others for special-purpose scanning when your main one is disabled. Or better yet, settle on one AV app for your PC and use online scans if you need a double check.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
    O16 - DPF: Win32 Classes -

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and OK. Yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders.

    Open C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB and rename realsched.exe to realsched.old
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.
Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Back in Windows visit Windows Update (this is the biggest problem I see. You have left the PC open to vulnerabilities that there are patches for). Accept all critical updates.
Reboot and go back to Windows Update until there are no more criticals offered.
Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

Thanks - well I have done all of the above. As far as I can see AVG is the only running av on my pc its the only one in the sys tray and the only 1 that does scheduled scans - the others are just there in my prog files if I need them. Also I used update and downloaded 52+ files from it but when I insdtalled them my pc would nt boot up any more I had to use system restore to take them back off now its fine again. I might just leave that if it's not too big an issue....... but here is a new Hijack this scan -- plz tell me what you see now......

Some of those critical updates are badly needed. There are worms and virui that exploit these, bypassing and then disabling AV programs. There very nature of these exploits are in the OS, and AV programs cannot protect against this.
The current log does look clean.

Ok all of the above is now done. I have ran all updates and downloaded the xp service pack. It took some doing - there were 52 updates available, which I had to download and install in small chunks cause the whole pack together crashed my pc. Anyway its done and heres my new HJT scan :

Can someone please read post #6 for me and tell me what you see - I followed all instructions in posts #1 thru 5 (pained over them lol to get them to work), now I assume my pc is tighter security wise, but has difficulty in booting up now, sometimes it will take up 15 minutes and as many attempts before the explorer page will come up, and also when I try to run applications (sometimes Aol, sometimes media player - it is random) the computer will instantly reboot itself and the same will occur. Can you tell me if there is anything in HJT above in #6 that will explain this - or if there are any other anomalies in there. Cheers ; )

Uninstall all but one antivirus program and firewall, always reboot when prompted

    Make a new folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Dean\antispyware <<for example and download the newer version to that folder, it also must be unziped, or just get the exe here >
    http://radiosplace.com/

and post a new log , describe any other problems even if they seem unrelated.

Ok I have uninstalled Avast AV, I am a bit weary about removing Norton or AVG : Norton I had to buy so I assume it must be a good av (I know what they say about assumptions...) and AVG came highly recommended and seems to be the better one, so could I not just have AVG running in the task bar and leave on Norton just for extra manual scans? If I have to have just one AV which one would you recommend? Anyway here is my new HJT scan :

You need to get the latest version of HJT to run the scan and post the log. Should be v1.98.1.

Keeping Norton for manual scans should be OK but you will have to make sure AVG is disabled when you do and also make sure you are keeping both up to date (so you also gotta disable AVG to update Norton and you may be vulnerable while doing the switch overs). Still not a great idea when you consider that there are quite a few good on-line scanning sites that are always up to data and won't get in the way of your onboard AV app.

Both the AV apps are good so keep whichever one you like the best.

Thanks for all your help folks - like I said earlier it's real good to see that there are human beings willing to put as much effort into helping people as others (ie. hackers, virus programmers, terrorists, politicians etc - you know who they are...) put into spreading misery. Cheers. Now back to my pc (lol) - ok I have now removed all AVs completely except AVG, I only have 1 firewall (ZoneAlarm) and I've done all updates you said. Also updated HJT - here is my new scan - what dya think now...... (btw my pc still has problems booting up - it resets at least ten times before it gets up and running - maybe its my processor? I think its a 733 MHz processor and I'm running xp - would that cause the boot up probs? Here is scan :

I didn't look at the HJT log but about the other issues:

    - no the processor you run should not have problems with XP. Won't be blinding fast but should run fine. Memory can be an issue so you need at least 256Mb for decent operation and 512Mb or even 1Gb is good.

    - Click on start, on run, type in CMD and OK to open a 'DOS' window. At the prompt type in
    Code:
    chkdsk /r
and ENTER then answer the questions to let it run the scan at next boot then reboot. It can take a little while to run.

    - When the PC boots back up, click on start, on run, type in
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
and OK. You will probably need your XP CD in the drive for the system file check to replace any damaged files it finds. The command runs pretty silently so you won't see a long report of what it found or what it did. You can get details if you want from start~run~eventvwr.msc and look in the event logs.

If chkdsk and sfc don't cure the multiple-reboot issues we'll have to dig some more but often they do fix things up.
