    Hello, I've just recently been trying to clean up our computer and have learned a lot from great forums like this one. I have Ad-Aware now and have scanned and quarantined about 5 times now. I was now hoping I could get someone to check out a HijackThis log for me. Some files I've gotten rid of seem to reappear each week. Also, Is QNNWAkQ a legit file? My firewall warms me about it at each reboot (sometimes). Thanks for any help. :)

    Hello Leigh,

    You're infected by MySearch -these are the MySearch entries:

    O2 - BHO: MyWebSearch Search Assistant BHO - {00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SearchAt\4.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL

    O2 - BHO: mwsBar BHO - {07B18EA1-A523-4961-B6BB-170DE4475CCA} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\4.bin\MWSBAR.DLL

    O3 - Toolbar: My &Web Search - {07B18EA9-A523-4961-B6BB-170DE4475CCA} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\4.bin\MWSBAR.DLL

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\4.bin\mwsoemon.exe

    O4 - Global Startup: MyWebSearch Email Plugin.lnk = C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\4.bin\MWSOEMON.EXE

    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZCxdm085

    Try removing it thru Add/Remove applet first as outlined in the link below:

    http://www.free-web-browsers.com/support/remove-mysearch.shtml

    Then post another log.

    Can't find any info on QNNWAkQ - I assume it's trying to access the net. It may be connected to MyWebSearch - we'll see.

    Regards - Charles

    I was working on a response while charlesvar posted his and I'm too lazy to edit mine right now so there is some overlap of things we both found. I also know I missed mentioning several items but too busy fighting a new Bagle variation to do more than just this for now.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.0 - version 1.98.2 is available so you need to get that one.
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    - not needed at startup.
    C:\documents and settings\kathleen godley\local settings\temp\QNNWAkQ.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QNNWAkQ] C:\documents and settings\kathleen godley\local settings\temp\QNNWAkQ.exe - almost surely not legit. Any .exe that runs from a temp folder is automatically suspect and any with a name that you can't search up for information on google is automatically suspect so this one is a double loser.
    Remove via Hijackthis and checking the entries
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C5183ABC-EB6E-4E05-B8C9-500A16B6CF94} - (no file)
    - spyware parasite that installs as part of funwebproducts.com screensaver. Control Panel/Add-remove and you should find it. Uninstall.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpromiseRemindU] wjview /cp "C:\Program Files\UpromiseRemindU\System\Code" Main lp: "C:\Program Files\UpromiseRemindU "
    O8 - Extra context menu item: RemindU - file://C:\Program Files\UpromiseRemindU\System\Temp\upromise_script0 .htm
    - part of adware (pop-ups mostly) from Ebates Moe Money Maker. Nothing I'd want for sure and you should be able to uninstall it from Add-remove. Look for Ebates Moe Money Maker.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime - not needed to load at boot up. Hogs resources for no real benefit to you. Remove.
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {120E090D-9136-4b78-8258-F0B44B4BD2AC} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ms.exe (file missing)
    - these worry me. MS.exe is not a legit Microsoft file and the little info I can find about it is in connection with virus activity. Usually MS***.exe where *** is numbers though rather than just that file name. Several mentions of a legit product with a name that included MaxSpeed but the CLSID also won't search up although it might if I dug into one of the COM-listing sites.
    Remove these also, or most of the other >blankblank< will return again
    With all browsers close with hijackthis fix these to.
    finally I am back!!!!
    Hi guys, thanks so much for your responses. I'm very sorry I haven't been able to get back to you and try your suggestions. I am only able to work on this computer on MOndays......
    I have updated HijackThis to newest version. I uninstalled My Search. I turned a few items off the Start Up menu. I fixed many of the suggestions in HijackThis.
    Some comments: UPromise is something we use on a regular basis. We have college savings accruing through this site. Also, SideStep is a program we use occasionally when we are booking travel arrangements online. It's something we knowingly downloaded. MAxSpeed may have been a part of a game my 12 year old plays from Treasure Planet (EA Games I think). I may have messed something up with it by trying to get rid of part of it....don't know. THere is only an uninstall file in it's folder which I ahve clicked on but nothing happens now. There's the MAxSpeed entry in to tools menu of explorer but nothing happens when I click on it.
    As for QNNWAkQ, not sure about that one. Does seem fishy that it sits in a temp folder. Not sure what to do about it.
    Thanks alot for the previous and future help!! Leigh
    Hello Leighbee,
    You still have SideStep, classed as a parasite http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/SideStep.html
    Try Add/Remove uninstall, post another log.
    O2 - BHO: SideStep Browser Helper - {08351227-6472-43BD-8A40-D9221FF1C4CE} - C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\SbCIe027.dll
    O16 - DPF: {C72242D0-3AB5-453D-842C-8A3C9AC0838D} - http://download.sidestep.com/get/k00726/sb027.cab
    Anything in a temp folder should be ok to remove, especially after all this time: HKLM\..\Run: [QNNWAkQ] C:\documents and settings\kathleen godley\local settings\temp\QNNWAkQ.exe
    I think you're getting re-infected w/ c r a p, SideStep wasn't there the last time. I don't see SpyBot's resident processes running. Perhaps you should :)
    Read Pinned thread: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=31535
    Regards -Charles
