    Hi All,

I have a 2 year old Dell that had started taking 2 minutes to shut down. I reinstalled XP, which solved the shut down problem, but now it takes 2 minutes to start up.

I've seen a lot of similar issues, but none that really seem to fit. All the drivers load, but then hangs after "agp440.sys ". The hard drive spins, spins, spins, and then it boots up. All is well after that. It's really more of an annoyance than anything else.

I'm virus free, spy/ad ware free and have only the minimal required at start up (ie: zone alarm, AVG anti virus). The computer works well otherwise.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

hmmmm....I happend to downgrade my zone alarm to 4.5 about 2 weeks ago due to pvp conflicts slowing down my computer. That fixed that, but not the start up hang.

I'm with you. Tried that one. Just showed that I have a long boot up. Didn't really explain it. (And, I did try the "fix it" part, but to no avail.)

I saw something about disabling the agp440 service. But I'm not so sure that's it. My drivers are all up to date, and that looks like it's loading fine. It's whatever is occuring after it that seems to be causing the hang. Whatever is making my HD spin seems to be the culprit. But I can't figure it out. I turned off ckdsk at start up in case that was it, but that didn't shorten the time.

    Have you tried selective starups?

In safe mode first, then the various selective startup options. After that the individual apps and disable each one at a time.

The only way I can think of maiking a stab at isolating the problem.

BTW, using the Selective Startup option deletes all your System Restore points, system will create an initial one at normal startup.

    Regards - Charles

Tried that too. Though part of me thinks that's what messed up my original shut down problem to begin with. I use Win Patrol to make sure that nothing else is in my start up that shouldn't be. I'm going to try MS's suggestion to turn off the agp440 service tomorrow and we'll see what happens.

    Thanks for your help!
