$20? The last time that I renewed my subscription to Norton's, it was only about $6. If it's changed that much since last Fall, I would buy the newest version. With upgrade discounts/rebates, you should be able to find it for about $25-30. I would check on the renewal price though. Renewing the subscription should be just as good as buying new again.

DD - not sure you are totally correct. After subscription for Def updates has expired, Live update will not give access to virus defs. I have also tried using your noted download site. Can download the new defs, but they won't install when executed.
Do you have a workaround, as my year is up in 50 days and I really don't want to purchase until the 2003 version is out. Presently using Norton Systemworks 2001.
    Thanks, Ken

Thanks that linked worked fine for me and it applied the updates. I had never realized that Norton had the def updates avail. for download.

.I had never realized that Norton had the def updates avail. for download.

If that is the case, havent you been updating your def files on a regular basis? You can go through start, programs, Norton, live update.

I have to agree with KLR, the def files have to have a current subscription or you cant get them. The link you used is okay because according to you, you have 50 days left on your subscription. You can still go through Norton live update and just ignore the notice about your subscription expiring for now. But once it expires, you will have to renew your subscription. The $20 sounds like updating the Norton program itself not the def file. I think the def file subscription is about what DD stated

    My Two Cents

I updated my def. a few months ago and it was easy and cheap. It only cost me $9.99. If I'm not mistaken, it also updates the version. I waited until it hit the 30 day mark and then it let me know that I could renew for another year if I click the link. It only took about 10 minutes to fill out the form and download the update. I'm good to go for another year.

    :)

Panda, are you suggesting that as well as getting another year of defs, you also get a version update. Updates come via live update from time to time, and therefore the version keeps itself up to date. My NAV2001 won't transform into NAV2002 wiil it?

No, 2001 will not transform into 2002, but the version on mine changed. It was 7.0 and now reads 7.07.23D. I know it's wrong to ASSUME, but I can only assume that it updated the version as well. Don't take my word for it exclusively! I sometimes get stuff like this mixed up. If I'm not mistaken, keeping your defs updated regularly are what's the most important thing about having a virus checker and therefore, subscribing for another year to defs is a good thing. By buying the latest NAV, it seems to me like you may just be buying a spruced up newer model with maybe one or two new features in it. I guess it would make a difference if there was something you saw in the latest version that you really could use on your pc. Otherwise, save your bucks and just update your defs for another year. I may be missing the point totally here, and I'm sure someone will set me straight. I trust you ALL to do that!

    :)

I have Norton SystemWorks 2000 and by using LiveUpdate it has updated the Norton AntiVirus 2000 to NAV 2001 as well as updating the def's. My guess is that the supscription allows the update of the NAV antivirus engine as needed as well as things like LiveUpdate, SARC etc.

BTW I have had no problems with Norton SystemWorks 2000 running on a Win98SE OS with all the updates, security fixes etc. Use it regularly to maintain HD, system, defrag, scan etc.

Now that I have said this it will probably go beserk!!!!

Remember, keep your virus def's up to date, I have had two virus downloads on e-mail's in the last two weeks from people I know and consider as safe. The bugs are out there!!!!

As with JohnB, my Norton's 2000 has gone to 2001 through all the updates. Just get the new subscription and you'll be fine.

Using Live Updates, you'll probably have an expiration. But, using this link (the same one as in the virus updates thread at the top) to download, you don't go through Live Updates.

    Further info:

    Live Updates and Intelligent Updater

Live Update automatically downloads the new def files and installs them. From the link above, you download an EXE file and install the defs manually.

Pay for automatic if you have the bucks.
