    All of a sudden I have a little bell blinking in my taskbar. When I hold the mouse over it , text comes up saying "Hot summer sale" If I double click it disappears for about 15 seconds and then comes back. If I left click it says "Open message" and "Leave it" Clicking on either only makes it disappear again only to return again. I have run an adware program with nothing showing up. I have checked my startup group with nothing matching this. Has anyone ever had this happen and how to get rid of it. Thanks

    From "Quicklinks" in my signature, download Hijackthis and place it in a folder other than temp or the desktop. Run it to generate a log file and post the entire contents of the log here.

    Moving this to the security section.

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe - I sorta worry when this one is running at startup. You need to find out exactly what it is doing. You don't specify if you have XP-home or XP-pro but the utility you need, Tasklist.exe, only ships with XP-pro although it will run on XP-home. Some features don't work but the one you need does.

    Download it from http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/utils/tasklist.exe if you don't already have it. It belongs in the system32 folder.

    Then start~run~cmd to open a command prompt and then
    Code:
    tasklist /m /fi  "IMAGENAME eq rundll32.exe" >C:\rundll32.txt
    to put details into the rundll32.txt file. Post the file contents here if you would.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    You can use Hijackthis to get rid of
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O1 - Hosts: 12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com12.129.205.209 sitefinder.verisign.com - this is a bad thing I think but I can't recall right off exactly what it indicates or how to best deal with it. Security is not my strongest area. I'll look around some or maybe (hopefully) one of the security experts will chime in and save me some work.
    O2 - BHO: IEWatchObj Class - {9527D42F-D666-11D3-B8DD-00600838CD5F} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\IETie.dll (file missing) - this item was reported as a problem at one point but Pest Patrol is now saying Oops, we goofed and it's legit.
    Location: systemroot+\system32\ietie.dll This is Ghostsurf from Tenebril Source: http://www.tenebril.com/products/ghostsurf/
    So, if you loaded the app it's probably OK. As for the 'file missing', HJT has been known to report this in error so check your system and if you have the file, I'd ignore this whole item. However, if you didn't install the app you probably want to get rid of the entry and then maybe the app if you can find an uninstall for it.
    Incredimail and weatherbug - I'm not a fan of either but some folks like them. Both, IMO, sludge a system and there are other, less obtrusive options.
    Nothings jumping out at me either
    This "Hot summer sale" I assume you see it in the tray not taskbar ?
    are there any options if you right click on it ?
    I wonder though why you dont have this line
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemTray] SysTray.Exe
    I see this elsewhere (its rare) and not marked as bad, since its seen so infrequently, can you provide some information on it.
    Lonnie - what about the
    O1 - Hosts: 12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com12.129.205.209 sitefinder.verisign.com
    The way it is all strung together it will simply ensure that nothing located at 12.129.205.209 will ever be reached from this PC but I really do seem to remember seeing this sort of thing paired up with a problem. Just can't call specifics to mind.
    That IP address, BTW, isn't one I like very much. a huge Incredifind.com search page that also tried to stuff a cookie from http://(bogus-part)popups.ad-logics.com on my system.
    A google search on incredifind.com shows it is a fairly nasty spyware site. Associated with KeenValue
    Trouble in Taskbar
    Lonnie
    I'm sorry, it is in tray not taskbar. When I right click it gives me two options
    1 Open Message
    2 Leave It.
    Nothing happens on either one. It just dissappears for 10 or 15 seconds and then comes back. I don't even have to be on line, it is always in tray.
    Not sure if it will help but edit your hosts file (that's hosts with no extension) and remove the line I was ranting about. hosts is a simple text file so notepad will do fine.
    I have no idea if it will help with your symptoms but there is no part of that entry that is a good thing.
    Fix this unless you know for sure its not the problem
    O4 - Global Startup: Uninstaller tray icon tool.lnk = C:\Program Files\Uninstaller\Tray icon tool.exe
    then restart the PC, if it turns out it is needed or not part of the problme Hiajckthis makes backups so that thing's can be put back.
    If you have a url to the programs web site link us to it ?
    Please do post another log
    Hi Newt , yep thats about all I see thats visible (the 010) and seeing a rundll32 or rundll can be a sign that somethings up.
    Hopefully the item Lonnie pointed out for removal will help.
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {578FC4E3-151E-456c-AF8E-B63061EFE228}} - (no file) - this one is broken. It should be a GhostSurf entry (Rose City Software) but if you installed the app, it isn't in correctly. Try uinstall and reinstall.
    I checked the various .dll files that rundll32.exe is calling and it looks legit. Best guess is a Symantec antispam app but if you aren't running one, there may be a problem so let us know.
    Still trouble in taskbar
    I thank all of you for trying to help me solve my problem. I have removed or deleted the items you spoke of but still no help.
    BUT I went into my startup groupe and deactivated each item and then rebooted to see if this solved the problem. I went through each startup item untill I got it right.
    It turned out to be the NVMedia center. This got rid of the bell. What is weird is that after rebooting the bell is gone completely and everything is ok. Today I reactivated the NVMedia center in the startup group and the bell is still gone. Can you explain that one?
    Again, thanks to Lonnie and Newt for all their help. Much appreciated.
