    Security Updates - Firefox 0.9.3 & Thunderbird 0.7.3

Due to the four Security vulnerabilities, update your Firefox and Thunderbird programs here: http://www.mozilla.org/

Be sure to read the Release Notes before installing.

    Updating 1.7.1

I have Mozilla 1.7.1. Do I just click on your link and save to disk and then install? Do I need to uninstall the 1.7.1 first?

I guess I need to uninstall

Looking around at the Mozilla website, it seems that I have to uninstall before installing the 1.7.2. What a bummer. I waited almost 2 months for the CD for 1.7 and paid a few bucks because I have dialup with slow download times. Why don't they have patches? Do they have security updates often? Do I have to worry about profiles or anything once I install the newer version?

    Any help is appreciated!

Most software upgrades are installed on top of the previous version. Why in Mozilla different? Ramona?

    Mozilla Security Update

    Ramona,

I did ask this and other questions on the sticky note, but got no reply, so thought I would ask again. Sorry if that was inappropriate. Do you know why there is no patch released for Mozilla 1.7.2? I have installed 1.7.1 after waiting almost 2 months for the CD (because of slow download times). Also, do I just uninstall the 1.7.1 and install the 1.7.2? Will I have to add/change anything like profiles?

    Thanks

Mozilla/Netscape do not, generally, work the patch way. The best way is to uninstall the program, and then install the new version. There is no need to make any changes to the profile.

Since it was a minor change I thought that it was not necessary to uninstall. I ended up uninstall 1.7, and then installing 1.7.1.
With 1.7.2, I decided not to ask questions. I did not look at what was installed before and after. I am willing to bet that it has to do with the GRE folder in Program Files|Common files|mozilla.org|GRE. I have noticed that the old GRE folder was gone after uninstalling. If you install on top, you would not be removing the specific GRE folder, and that probably cause problems.
I am just guessing, but that split personality has bugged me since it first appeared.

    Jeane,

I completely missed your post yesterday, and my apology!

Mozilla suggests NOT installing over the existing version. From the Mozilla FAQ:

1.4. How do I install a newer version of Mozilla?

First, uninstall Mozilla, as detailed for your operating system in the Mozilla Release Notes, then install the new version. You should never install a new version of Mozilla over a previous one.

Uninstall the existing version through Add/Remove, reboot your PC, then install 1.7.2.

Read the Release Notes before installing, that's why I always post the link, and it will give you the install instructions.
