Windows XP Home will not install. I'm trying to install a fresh copy. I've had
old copy for almost three years. When I try to install, the CD goes through
the preliminaries of checking the hardware. When it gets to the point to where it asks (to repair or install a fresh copy) the computer freezes. I've
tried tlme and time again for the last three days and it continues to freeze up. Appreciate any help. :) Thanks,Lennie. :)

    System: MOBO-Soyo SY-P4X400,CPU-Intel Pent. 4 1.7GB,Hdd-Maxtor 60GB,
    Mem.-512MB DDR, Viveo-nVidia GeForce 4 MX 440 64MB Video, Sound- Sound Blaster PCI 512.

I've had that problem. I solved it by using another CD ROM.

Have you removed all unnecessary hardware, e.g. printer, scanner, any USB devices before attempting the install?

The early version of XP (pre SP1) was a bit finicky with some hardware.

Look in your Mobo manual, and clear CMOS. Usually it is just diconnecting main power supply, the plug from the power supply to the mobo, and look for pins with a tiny little plastic piece you don't want to lose. When you are done, reboot and set your BIOS as needed, then set your boot order to cd first. Make sure your disk is clean. Install XP.

Sorry I have'nt gotten back to all of you sooner. I appreciate all of you and your expertise, but I still could'nt get it to stop freezing up. I tried installing a new copy over the old and it worked. Computer is working much better. In the event that I may want to do a clean
install in the future could I just FDISK the hdd first. If so could this stop the
freeze-up. Thanks To All of You Lennie :)
