    it seems to be coming back after i delete it. pest patrol (full version) picks it up at start-up regularly and i choose to delete. spyware blaster often has 1 item unprotected and i have to protect against active-x.

    it gives the path in my registry as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/microsoft/internetexplorer/active-xcompatibility{c109664b-ceb1-420b-b353-d55a561536dd} (or something like that)

    anyway i am thinking i need to delete the registry item, if so am i right i need to disable system restore, enable /safeboot through boot.ini then reboot. locate the files within registry, delete then uncheck /safeboot and restart. turn system restore back on?

    i thought i'd seek more expert advice from your good selves thanks.

    edit: i used registry first aid which was sent to me over msn, i'll see how it goes. also i sent a submittance of my pest history to pest patrol and they sent me a download of digital detective which i am running as i type.

    and after a reboot of deleting the registry item through registry first aid, pest patrol finds it again. on them seeing the log they see that i'm plagued since 28th july with it and sent my remittance of digital detective. pest patrol keeps deleting it though so theres one good thing.

    Hi Tenchy,

    Lets look at a HijackThis log.

    http://www.richardthelionhearted.com/?url=merijn.richardthelionhearted.com

    Under downloads upper left corner > scroll down to mirrors.

    Install to it's own folder and save the scan and copy into post here.

    Don't disable System Restore just yet - anything in there is inert unless actually restored. Time enough to do that once you make sure that the problem is resolved on the "live" system state. If something goes wrong with a fix or any other major problem, you can go back to where you are now and tackle the problem again.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Tenchy,

    I don't see anything that I recognize as malware - you say that PP takes it off and then re-appears on bootup. So is this log after a bootup and PP not deleting?

    I do notice that you have MS's update site appearing as a start page twice and your mention of disabling ActiveX reminds me that in order to use the v4 site, activeX has to be enabled, otherwise it will "loop" (do nothing).

    Since this is not an critical situation - wait until Lonny or Newt have a look at it.

    Regards - Charles

    EDIT: Looked up the CLSD you refered to: So whatever is running is a Brower Helper Object or a Toolbar. I don't see it in the log.

    The HijackThis that your using is not the latest - download from here:
    http://radiosplace.com

    That mirror is updated with the 1.198.1 version.

    I'm putting my edit from the previous post in here.

    the active x thing i mention is everytime i run spyware blaster, 1 item is disabled and on clicking there are loads of active x diallers in red text with the box stating 'prevent the installation of active x based spyware, dialers etc'. i have to keep checking it

    as for the CLSD thing ... I referred to it? i'm lost as what that is :confused:

    in fishboys trojan thread, PeteC gave a link to a trojan scan. i'm running that and to get started i had to check active x was enabled. it wasn't, i never knew that was like that and i recognized the screenshot giving medium as that is what i had. i'll run hijack and get another log once it is finished and paste up.

    You did here in your first post:
    Read all about them - should be CLSID not CLSD as I posted.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/com/htm/reg_6vjt.asp

    Where to look up the identities:

    http://computercops.biz/CLSID.html Look up CLSID's

    I don't know if you use SpyBot and Ad-Aware, if not, you should, they are free and effective. Url will link to the downloads.

    oh ok a CLSID is the numbers in { and }. i was unaware of the term. i do use spybot and adaware aswell as pesptpatrol, spysweeper, spyblaster.

    so is this CLSID good or bad? i'm hopeless at reading between the lines when it comes to computer tech stuff?

    i see the info ....

    How to Remove AdShooter?

    To uninstall the program, click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs. Select the entry named 'CPR' or 'AdRoar', and click Add/Remove to uninstall it.

    To manually remove this adware, please follow these instructions:

    Unregister the dll files. To do this, open a Dos command prompt window(from Start > Programs > Accessory), enter the following commands:

    For Windows 2000/XP/NT,

    cd %WinDir%/System32
    regsvr32 /u syssfitb.dll

    Or for Windows 98/Me,

    cd %WinDir%/System
    regsvr32 /u syssfitb.dll

    Open the Regsitry Editor (Click Start > Run, type 'regedit').

    Delete The following keys if they exist:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{c109664b-ceb1-420b-b353-d55a561536dd}
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\clsid\{c109664b-ceb1-420b-b353-d55a561536dd}
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\classes\clsid\{c109664b-ceb1-420b-b353-d55a561536dd}
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\internet explorer\toolbar\{c109664b-ceb1-420b-b353-d55a561536dd}

    Reboot the computer.
    Open the System folder( C:\Windows\System (Windows 95/98/Me), C:\WINNT\System32 (Windows NT/2000), or C:\Windows\System32 (Windows XP)) and delete the following file:
    syssfitb.dll

    i'll wait for newt or lonny before advancing with this then, thanks again charles.

    Hi Tenchy,

    I looked back over your first post and I was struck by the lack of any sysmptoms that affects performance, in other words this originated with PP telling you that you have this malware.

    Do you have a unasked for toolbar?

    So I went looking - read this thread at Wilders http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=42787

    so i'm reading that this could be a 'false positive' which i take to be a euphemism for something not actually there. i saw snapdragin give advice saying to mail pest patrol which is what i am chasing up and i also saw someone say that pest patrol seems best for those aware of spyware/adware (which does not describe me at all). thanks for finding that charles

    i also see frogmanla is experiencing what i am through spyware blaster in the active x protection being turned off each boot.

    i did have an unasked for toolbar which i knocked off by unchecking the 'Program Software' option in the drop down menu under 'View/Toolbars'. i don't think that is there anymore after my comp got a cleaning last week from you, newt and ldtate.

    i do still have a bt/yahoo companion toolbar which i uncheck
