I'm building a box for my brother using a new Systax sv266a mobo and a new AMD 1.66 gig Altholon XP CPU,new case with a 350 watt power supply. It starts fine when it's cold, but when I restart,I get nothing but power supply and CPU fan. No system beep, video, hard drive activity or hd led. It happens whether in Windows or not. It don't matter if I shut down and try to restart,or just press the restart button. If I wait a half hour or so,it'll start fine. I've reset the bios to default and cleared cmos.Anybody got a suggestion?

    Thanks in advance,Mark

That's a puzzler - has to be temperature related.

My best guess is the mobo. I would think, but not sure that once the computer has booted the BIOS has little to do with it. With the computer operating everything warms up to reveal a bios problem - maybe with the chip connection to the mobo dry joint, etc. When it cools down again the BIOS works happily.

As I said - an educated (?) guess. Sounds like you should return the mobo.

I assume that once it's booted the PC will run for as long as you want?

    Yup!

You got it,once it has booted,it runs fine for as long as you want.I have built two other systems using the same mobo without a problem. I'm just checking all the bases before I have to send it back I already emailed the folks I bought it from and the makers of the mobo. Still waiting to hear from them though.I was just hoping I may find an easy fix here

    Thanks,Mark.

    Mark,
Have you tried substituting another power supply so you can rule that out?
Possibly could be heat related in the supply.

If you feel like experimenting, turn off BIOS shadowing in Setup (which puts bios into RAM at boot), and hopefully all BIOS calls from the OS will be made to the actual BIOS, and see if the computer still runs as well (but maybe slower).

If you get errors it could be that the bios chip is bad. Alternative is flash the bios, but I wouldn't do that on a new mobo, let the factory do it.

Paul I havent tried that yet but it sounds like a good idea. This isn't a high dollar case and it came with 350 watt power supply installed.(looking around to see which machine I want to butcher for this) I think I'll try Sparrows suggesion with the bios shadowing first  Thanks to both of you. I'll get to it tommorow after work and let you know what happened tommorow nite.

Well Sparrow,I tried the bios shadowing right off but it made no difference. As soon as I got out of setup,it wouldn't restart. If it's a heat problem,it don't take much.I booted, went straight into setup, made the change and tried to reboot.
So,enie, meanie, minie, moe, which gets the screwdriver tommorow.

    Thanks again,Mark

I'll find out tonite. The box I'm using now has the same mobo in it.I just go to fashion a tool to pull it out.I looks like I can do it with some careful bending of a heavy paper clip. Wouldn't a true redneck use a coat hanger and some duct tape? lol We''l see how it goes tonite.

    Hi Blufx,
Now you're scaring me! I wouldn't touch the working computer! The tool you need is a DIP Extractor, or a PLCC I.C. Extractor - depending on characteristics of the BIOS chip - not very expensive. However, better to try to flash the present chip before purchasing a new bios chip. But isn't it under warranty? How about getting it replaced? The motherboard, that is. As Pete originally suggested.

Oh dont worry.Thinking about it,it is under warranty and I shouldn't touch it any more than I have to.I'll just send it back. But I wasn't afraid of the swap.I had a system I got from Tiger direct that was a joint effort between Shuttle,Creative Labs, and Empac that put me through bios hell.Since none of the above wanted to admit they had anything to do this particular mobo(Empaq went out of bussiness shortly after this)and support was out of the question,I was forced into a crash course on bios flashing and even hot swaping bios.I do thank you for your concern though. One wrong move and you find youself looking at a screen as blank as the faces on the people at Radio Shack when you ask a question.
    But,I'm gonna send it back.

    One more time,Thanks
