I downloaded Windows XP SP2 RC2 and was in the process of installing it when I received a copy error. It read: "Setup cannot copy the file opengl32.dl_." I was prompted to either verify its location, change its location, or insert 'Windows Service Pack 2 Source Files' in a drive that I specify. I was only able to verify its location and retry copying, but was ultimately forced to cancel the installation.

How should I proceed to get a valid copy of opengl32.dl_ for installation?

Did you download the entire 260+Mb service pack and install from there?

Do you have SP1 installed? There were problems with that dll in the base version of XP and you may need the SP1 version for the install to run.

    29-Nov-2001 01:50 5.1.2600.21 686,080 Opengl32.dll Intel or later version.

Just an observation from the peanut gallery, but since SP2 is very close to being released in it's final version, why the rush to download, what is essentially still beta software?

    WhitPhil has a good point.

For the other, my "uninstall" version of the file is the same size as yours. March 2003 so newer but probably the same file.

Not sure what to suggest. You might be able to use a copy of the new one that is already expanded. What RC2 build version are you trying to load?

Thanks for your comments and prompt replies.

There is no rush to download. In my particular case, there are a number of security patches that need to be reinstalled for other reasons. I thought it would be easier and better just to go to SP2.

Encouraged by the fact that the dll on my computer was current, I "uninstalled" what I had done before, and then tried to install again. Surprisingly, all the files copied. The installer, however, had a problem after the files were on my computer, and gave me a different error message before completing cleanup and installation. The latter error was more serious, because it affected Explorer and prevented me from restarting either normally or in safe mode.

Fortunately, I had a ghost image of my hard drive which I used to restore my computer this morning.

    Version 5.5.21.0

Depending on availablity of the final release, I may try to install the version I have downloaded once again.

? Thats not a build number for Xp SP2.

Current (public or beta) numbers are:

    2160
    2161
    2162

The file that I downloaded was labeled xpSP2.exe.
    Type: Application
    Description: Self-Extracting Cabinet
    Size: 264 MB
    File Version: 5.5.21.0
    Copyright: Microsoft Corporation
Digital Signature Timestamp: Thursday, June 10, 2004

If I am not mistaken, I need to install the update before I can determine its build number.

That's correct. You gave the file version, not the build number Newt was asking for.
