    Every once in a while when I use IE I get an icon on my desktop named "default.dat ".

    Anyone know what this is?

    I don't know what it is either and I'm sure there are better solutions to getting rid of or moving it but if all else fails, make it a hidden file... out of sight, out of mind.

    I'd keep an eye out for its size though, it might grow and grow. I have a hunch it might be similar to index.dat in the Temp Internet Files directory... do you have Web content active on your desktop by any chance... if so it could be related to synchronizing off-line web pages.

    Sorry, not much help, just tossing a few ideas around.

    Thanks for the replies. Next time I get it I will check the properties. Have checked them before but don't remember them. I do get this both at home and at work. Two different IPS's and 2 different access methods (ADSL and dial-up).

    It appeared again. The properties box has only a General tab and it contains:

    Type: DAT file
    Location: C;|WINDOWS\Desktop
    Size: 48bytes

    MS_DOS name: DEFAULT.DAT
    Created: Wednesday ..etc...
    Modified: Wednesday ....
    Accessed: Wednesday...

    Attribute: Archive
