I reinstalled winamp 2.8 and all of a sudden application files are opening in winamp and they have the winamp icon. I tried deleting winamp, but now app and exe files won't open at all. I can't even get msconfig or regedit to come up (it keeps telling me the specified path does not exist). I have no idea what to do. I have to open my computer and use that to use the internet. Can someone please help me...

Try this as a cure for the applications issue

start~run~cmd to open a DOS window

assoc .exe=exefile (no spaces before or after =)

    Post back with the results.

I'm using Version 5 of WinAmp. However, in Options> Preferences, there is an area to check file associations (what files you want to use WinAmp to open), and if I remember correctly, WinAmp is like that in earlier versions, too. In the Control Panel> Folder Options > File Types you can change the programs that open specific file extensions and restore default associations.

When you say you tried to delete WinAmp files, did you mean "uninstall ", as in through the Control Panel's add/remove programs? What were you planning to do in msconfig or regedit?

I know about the file association options in winamp, but exe wasn't even listed. And I couldn't uninstall winamp through the control panel because it kept saying "path does not exist" when I tried to open add/remove programs. As for the regedit thing, I did a lot of searching to try and figure out what to do and one of the web sites said I had to edit the registry (which I couldn't do because it wouldn't open). Then I found another web site that suggested saving the text below as a reg file to edit the registry for me. It fixed the problem. Thanks to everyone who tried to help.

Interesting - I'd seen that registry fix while searching but didn't want to recommend it without first taking time to verify that the entries match those on a working system.

Glad to hear it worked for you. Any remaining issues?
