Thought I might sport some (good freebie) hardware utility links in my signature, then thought that there may be a few suggestions to be found in the forum.

What are your suggestions for some good h/w utilities?
...and no "keeping the best ones to yourself "!

How about Everest (Aida32) for starters?

    Hi Mattman,

I hope you include DOS utilities. The following two are on all my boot floppies.

I still use LIST.com to examine files without danger of changing them, and it will switch from hex to text and back with a keystroke, and read files of any OS. Takes files of any size and type. It's interesting to examine viruses for internal messages with list.

I also like the graphic Qfiler (qf.exe), predecessor of file manager and explorer; and I love its addition qfdeldir.exe, which quickly does what it says. Qf has most of the dos functions, as for example, attrib.

I think Belarc is a good choice. File is under 1.0 MB and fits on a floppy.

Also IrfanView is another good freebie.

Paul, I'm asking this so I don't have to use MY brain! :D . OK...I'll look through my collection (I'm a horder of utilities). A lot probably relate to the Operating System.

There is the MS memory tester (which I haven't used yet), I have a memory test in another program. (Like to know if will run in DOS?).

SiSoft Sandra has some similar functions to Everest (mine is actually the Aida32 version), but also has some benchmarking capabilities and "burn-in" functions if you want to stress your hardware. I like having both. I have Belarc Advisor, but haven't used it much.

I use the DOS version of F-prot antivirus and found I could burn the program files onto a disk and run it from the CD with a boot floppy, if I suspected a boot virus or Windows would not start.

I have used a program called "pciscan" and it was somewhat helpful when I could not identify some PCI cards.

I have a program called Soundcard Detector, but have not needed to use it yet.

Another one I have not used yet is called DIAG, blurb says it is more powerful than a lot of expensive professional software, but is still beta. Says it is best for testing motherboards and soundcards.

I got the "Ultimate Boot Disk ", but getting it to run is has eluded me.

One aim I have is that I would like to get all these programs together make up a "Utilities CD ".

Sparrow, haven't looked yet, but are those programs easy to find, they look good?

    Matt

I have an old Simtel CD that's full of old dos utils, but I checked the Simtel site and there's no sign of the oldies but goodies.

    You can download List.com here.
I'm still looking for qf, but if I can't find it I can send it to you ziped if you like.

Thanks for the replys and links. I am starting to sift through them.

Pete, I think we have come across some good ones on top of the thread you pointed out.

Paul, I will be checking the links you have in your signature, they gave me inspiration. I have only come across a registry defragmenter recently and my system seems to have fewer hiccups after I ran it. Sounds like quite a good idea and seems to work, mine was in a purchased program though.

My "utilities CD" will be ready for anything :) .

Good of the people that wrote, tested and supplied these programs, isn't it?

    Matt
