I have about 25 Compaq nx9010 laptops. Anytime we try to run InterVideo's WinDVD, the program loads fine, but when you hit play, you get in green writing "Overlay Failed: Please lower your resolution or color depth." Of course, when I change either or both I still get the error message and obviously the dvd won't play. It seems I came across a fix for this somewhere several months ago but I can't for the life of me find it. Anyone familiar with this and know how to fix it?

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks Paul...I'll give those a try. I know we have Remote Desktop enabled...maybe that is the culprit.

Thanks again. I'll report back if that fixes it.

    Hi,

We use a similar tool called RemCon and it too generates the exact same problem as what you described. The issue stems from the fact that both Remote Desktop and the DVD player compete for direct screen access. We solved the problem for Remcon by modifying the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\gdihook5\Start . By changing the value from 3 to 4 the netsupport mirror driver will be disabled and the client will be put in screenscrape mode.

I haven't a clue if Remote Desktop uses the same registry key, but with the information above tech support should be able to help you out.

For Remcon uninstalling the software wasn't enough as the gdihook5\start value was not removed.

    Hope this helps!

    Jason,

The full articles by the Remcon company, explaining in greater the detail the cause and remedy of the issue, are no longer on the Internet. I still have a soft copy of those articles; just drop me an e-mail or ask me here if you would like to see 'em.

    Best regards,
    Maurice.
