johanna- luna is the 'xp shell' codename from way back. habit to call it that since its different from 2000. This Link shows the programmerese for 'launching something'. A shell object (like a folder, or a registered file type) has various operations it knows how to do, like 'open' or 'print', it registers those with the shell, and when you double click, or right click on something, you get a list of those 'verbs' to launch from. Since steve said when he doubleclicked a folder, it launched 'search', instead of 'open', something is messed up with his verbs. Either the shell thinks it called open and something hijacked open, or open is not his default verb, or his object cache is looking for Verb#2 which used to be open, but now is search or something.. (thats my thought process).

I originally dismissed the generic icons as being a shelliconcache issue, but i wonder if something bigger is afoot. Its interesting that those are messed up, since they are not 'real', but just shell extensions. I wonder if zander is on to something, and the 'folder' file type isnt the one i pointed out. I havent ever actually debugged that one before, i just guessed. Too late to look for it tonite.. I'll consider it some more tomorrow.

Maybe good ole Kelly comes through again?

#18 in the list. "Search opens when double clicking a folder "

It's a real simple reg file. Before you run it, have a look at the key and compare what you have now to the reg file. If it's different it would be interesting to know what you currently have in that key.

** We're getting somewhere. I wasn't about to "just" import the reg entry. Spent several minutes trying to figure out how/when/where to add it.

BUT, it did get me to thinking which is dangerous beofre I've had my coffee.

There are two file types called Folder & File Folder. The action for File Folder was FIND. I added another Action->Explore and Yee Haa, Houston we have a winner.

Double clicking a folder works as expected. Double clicking a desktop shortcut to a folder now works.

"Remaining" issues - desktop properties->apperance tab->Windows & Buttons->XPStyles is missing and unaccounted for.

Few system icons are stuck in generic mode. The three on the start menu (run, search & help) In explorer->control panel, In control panel->admin tools, network connections & scheduled task.

THANKS everyone for helping. Feels kind of weird being on the receiving end of things...

    I got this back: desktop properties->apperance tab->Windows & Buttons->XPStyles

Copied luna.msstyles back to the resource folder and "opened" it...

Good. I was just in the process of doing some searching on this in the Google groups. There's others that have the same problem but after looking at many threads I never did come up with the answer. Was just about to start looking through tgtsoft's forums when you posted the answer. Where did you come up with it? Now, you just have to recover the icons. Right?

Joe's note about "luna is the 'xp shell' codename from way back "

That and comparing reg entries and files between machines.

Ok. This next is a real stretch but it wouldn't hurt for you to take a look. I've been doing some searching in my registry and came across this key that points to help and support.
    PHP:
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2559a1f1-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}]
Check the default icon subkey in it to see what you have in there. On mine, under name there is just "default" . The following line is what's under data.

    %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-24

If yours is different you could try changing it and see if you get the help icon back. I would guess that you'd have to either reboot or log off for it too take effect. I really don't know if that's all there is to it or not though. As I said, it's a stretch. If it works, I was searching for shell32.dll (there's a lot of hits) and also came across ones for my computer and a couple other shell items. I didn't go all the way through though, as I thought I'd first post this and see if it works. If it does and you do any searching of your own, and if you get a hit on shell32.dll and it's in a key named default icon, you have to click on the CLSID key that it's a subkey to in order to find out what it's for.

Let us know what you find.

I was searching through the tgtsoft newsgroups and found a few others that had similar icon problems. The usual response was that you could straighten it out by using a program called Iconpackager. If it works it would probably save you a lot of time. You might want to have a look at it.

One more thought. For the recycle bin, have you tried display properties>desktop>customize desktop?

I changed the reg to match yours but know joy.

Recycle bin is ok. Its the control panel in explore thats generic. I already have two icon changers. But will try Iconpackagers tomorrow. Weird thing is that in file associations it show the correct ones?

Thanks for all your help. I'm hittin the sheets in a couple of minutes :)

Don't you just love software that replaces core WinXP files in order to function? :(
