I have Windows XP and Earthlink Total Access. Recently I have lost the abilities to-

Right Click in Internet Explorer (I can anywhere else like desktop, MS Word)
    Print in Internet Explorer
    Download things from the internet

I have already called Earthlink, and there is nothing they can do about it, and I have downloaded and ran SpyBot and AdAware. None of them seemed to help. Any ideas to whats wrong?

    Wouldn't hurt to do this.

Download HijackThis from link in my signature. Save it to a permanent folder (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT). Open and hit scan, then save log. Once it is saved it will open in notepad. Select all from the edit button, copy and paste the results here. Don't fix anything with it yet! Someone experienced with the logs will advise you.

lpdrummer - Welcome to the Board :)

You may have a virus/malware/adware related problem - did you update the definitions of Spybot and Ad-aware before scanning and are you using the latest versions - Ad-aware build 181 and Spybot 1.3. If not download the latest versions and update them through Quicklinks in my signature.

Run an online virus check from RAV (via Quicklinks) and if this fails to cure the problem download HijackThis (via Quicklinks) save it to a folder on your hard drive and run it. When the scan has finished the Scan button changes to Save log file. Save it, open in NotePad, Edit > Select All - copy and paste into a post here.

Moving this thread to Internet Explorer/Outlook Express. If you post a HJT log the thread will be moved again to Security/Virus/Spyware

I had the EXACT same problem on my work PC. Our IT Department subs out to a company to backup all of our data each night, so in a system crash they can "theoretically" come in remotely and restore everything to exactly what it once was.

My point is.. my PC had a major hard drive crash and to fix the problem they eventually had to completly uninstall Internet Explorer and reinstall it. Their reason for doing it was, "There must have been something very wrong with Internet Explorer. "

They tried everything from scanning for viruses, to running spyware detection, to repairing Internet Explorer, to making sure all the critical updates had been applied.

I went on my friends computer and downloaded the most recent IE. However, when I brought it hoem, 89% through the installition it stopped because 'It had not passed windows logo testing' even though this is a mircosoft product trying to work on a mircrosoft computer.........

If you refer to the URL in the post by Welshjim you will see that you do not need another copy of IE to repair - it is already in the i386 folder.

Have you run sfc /scannow - the first repair option?

Midnight here - catch up in the morning.

    sfc /scannow

sfc /scannow generally takes of the order of 10 minutes to complete during which time the hard drive is constantly active. Is your hard drive working away when you run this? When sfc completes it exits without any dialogue box - to see which files, if any, were replaced look in Event Viewer - System.

Seems you have a problem or two to sort out - seen your other thread. I will endeavour to research your problem a little today.

In the meantime, as a precaution, it might be a good idea to ensure your data is all backed up. Sooner or later down the line the suggestion to reformat and reinstall is bound to crop up.
